Re: DMN: 10 things about Cole Beasley
Best wishes to Beasley and the Cowboys.
I wonder how many on this board remember the Ice Bowl so long ago like I do? I can still see Meredith coming on the field for the last Dallas possession, hands on hips, and IMO his body language asking the question. "How did this get so _ _ _ _ _ _ up?"
From the time of that game I have questioned whether a championship should be determined in an open stadium in a place like Green Bay in January. Yes, football is an outdoor game. Yes, I admire the good bad weather teams when I shiver indoors. But IMO a game in those conditions is not a realistic extension of what we watch in the fall.
Hang the NFL rules.
I recall a good small player named Beasley of about the same stature as Cole at Woodrow Wilson some several years before the Ice Bowl and have long wondered just what, if any, is the family connection.

I was 8 years old, watching beside my dad.

same here, same age, with my dad...cried (again) after that heartbreak, following the Cotton Bowl debacle from the year before.
Oval screened Zenith 'portable' B&W tv, with the sound turned down ("because of those damned eastern-biased announcers"), listening to the biased Dallas announcers on local radio (KRLD, I think). Took a few years to realize that the hated Packers were a marvelous machine, and a joy to watch.

I was there. It was far more windy than has ever been noted in the press accounts.

YES. And I was twenty something years older than you.

Depending on reports (modern scale differs), -50 to -70 Fahrenheit wind chill. Damn.

Well, since I'm still up...you always see that rotating sign with the minus 13 reading on NFL Films; that was before the kickoff. When the shadows spread across the stadium as the day wore on, it was much colder.

Oh, and back to the main point, best of luck to Cole, and to Sterling.

Not to hijack your comments on Beasley - which I completely agree, but still trying to work this out.
The only Mustangs that played were Gregg, Meredith, and I guess Rhome. Couldn't be Meredith for obvious reasons, Gregg was too old to play with Myrdel, and I think the same for Rhome. I really thought it would be easy to figure out. I guess I will have to ply it out of Mrydel with beers at the BLVD some day.
Good luck to the cowboys and especially the Mustangs in the game - don't forget Sterling Moore who has been an important contributor on defense. Chris Banjo is still listed on the Green Bay roster, is he playing?
