S.T.A.N.G.S. - New Campus Spirit Org.

Post by RSine »

Just to let everyone know. A new campus spirit group has been formed. The group is known as S.T.A.N.G.S. and is founded on six pillars. These six pillars are Spirit, Traditions, Academics, Nobility, Gathering and Service. If you would like further information check out the web site below or e-mail me at [email protected].

This is something that needs to be done.

A couple of questions. What will you all do exactly? Just show up and support or have meetings or make signs? Any info would be appreciated.

S.T.A.N.G.S. main purpose will be to lead spirit by showing spirit. We will be represented at mostly ever sporting event. It's impossible to predict if we will be present at every sporting event but we are going to try. Secondary, we are planning to hold pep rallies for home football games and other major events for other sports. Plans are to have student organizations organize and plan the pep rallies so other students have vested interest in these type of events. Other things in the works are a general t-shirt to be sold for $5 or less (depending on help from outside sources) for all students and alumni to wear at the games. This will be much like other schools that fill their stands and sometimes ours with their school colors. Any other suggestions to help promote spirit are welcome from all.

This is great news - anything to help breed spirit and passion for the Ponies.

Idea for your T-shirt: make sure to make the shirts blue with white writing, and call the fans "PonyFans" -- and if you can add the ".com" that would help our favorite website.

Rsine,

I have a question. Will this organization compete with the Maniacs? Or will you all join forces? Or are you all replacing them? I thought the Maniacs had a good thing going until this past year when no one showed up. A rebirth of the hecklers and fans in Moody is what we need and we need them to migrate to Ford during the football season.

To answer your question about competing with the Maniacs, no I will not be competing with the Maniacs.
If we don't work together then what is the point of having spirit. Spirit is something that unites people together. If anything I would hope to gain members from all of the spirit organizations and join forces. This group is gonna be for the die hards.
To give you some info on the founding of the group, I am former Mustang Band as well are a couple of the other members.
We will be a group that is united together by our spirit for the history and traditions of SMU. I feel that a student group that provides the kind of unity found in other groups such as the Mustang Band, cheerleaders, and such is what the school needs. I agree that the Maniacs are a good thing and are something the school needs, but we also need a unified group to lead the students by example in honoring our traditions and showing spirit.
I apologize because I'm not real good about writing out my thoughts. So, if you would like to know more, contact me at [email protected] and I will talk with you over the phone or in person if needed and tell you all you want to know about the organization.

why not work with the Maniacs and try and install your thoughts and efforts to the existing Maniacs?
You might be spreading yourself thin with the students.

Bob put up flyers all over campus, but never really generated any big interest. One awesome thing he always did was sit out in front of the student center and have people walking by sign posters to put in the locker rooms. And he did it for ALL sports: swimming, rowing, soccer, etc. I was one of the few in the group, but before it ever got big, Bob graduated and no one stepped up to take over. His whole plan was to make something that was an actual group, not just pay 5 bucks, get a red shirt, show up when you want kind of a deal like the Maniacs is now. It would probably work great if a large existing group like a frat started something like this, but one guy (die-hard Band guy and Peruna handler) couldn't carry all the weight. Looking in old yearbooks you see the squires, the manada wranglers, etc, and they all seem to be more organized than Maniacs. If you ever go to a UT game, you will see like 10 different groups all over the stadium, and they are usually not more than 10-15 people in each group. There are the shirtless L-O-N-G-H-O-R-N-S guys, the guys wearing chaps and firing the cannon, etc. I wish we had more students who took initiative to come up with something creative.

It's never easy to start a new organization. Escpecially at SMU. In my opinion, I think it is even more difficult to maintain them once the people who started it have moved on. I was always curious what ever happened to this organization...never really seemed to gain any traction at all.
