Surgery for Emelogu
SMU guard Ben Emelogu said Tuesday that he had surgery Monday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. The transfer from Virginia Tech said he originally suffered the injury in high school, but "I never got it fixed" and then said that he "tore it some more before the UCLA game." Emelogu said the surgery went well, and that he will be cleared to run in about eight weeks.

Interesting. I'm glad the surgery went well.

Re: Surgery for Emelogu
This is a minor surgery. He's probably already walking and bending his knee.

Technically, he was walking, but very slowly and very gingerly. Didn't see him bend it much at all - it wasn't in a cast, but it was heavily wrapped.

Maybe the issue with his leg was affecting his shot. I wish him a speedy full recovery.

They probably just told him his knee was messed up to get him out of his funk. Then he goes in for "surgery" and feels better after. Doc just opened him up and closed it back up.

not much "opening up" for a meniscus repair. two incisions at the top of the knee about 1/4" each. one for the scope and one for saline if i recall correctly.

Re: Surgery for Emelogu
I had surgery in September to repair my torn meniscus and I was walking the next day. It's reasonably minor, but even with rehab, I couldn't do a quad stretch and touch my heal to my butt for almost 5 months (I scar pretty bad in general though). Getting all the strength back in your knee and quad is the tough part, because until you're back to normal, the pain doesn't really go away. Walking up stairs hurts.
Point being, he'll be fine and this really isn't something that should've effected his game, but he'll definitely feel better.

You do not cast these kinds of surgeries. The idea is that you need to get your knee bending again as soon as possible otherwise you may permanently lose mobility. Why I had my ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair my leg was wrapped but immobilized in a brace. I actually climbed a flight of stairs with crutches and one leg my first day.

Edit: He should be feeling okay still from the nerve block. Usually the most painful day is day 2 or 3.

Re: Surgery for Emelogu
I had my knee scoped in February due to a torn meniscus. I had a full range of motion within about two weeks. But it's started to ache more now that it did two weeks after the surgery. My doc, who is actually one of the team docs, told me that was expected as they pumped up my knee with a steroid after surgery and that the impact of that was wearing off.
But there's no way I could play any type of sport at a semi-competitive level today (for many reasons...) given the knee.
I've never had an ACL injury, but it is a much more serious surgery. I was fine after my meniscus with some ice on my knee, a few hydrocodone and some bourbon, with a little more ice.

Knee surgeries are weird. I had a boxing match a month and a half after the surgery in August last year but I still have trouble with squats and lunges. I basically have no VMO thanks to atrophy and rebuilding it is freaking slow. He should have some top notch physical therapy lined up to get him back to speed.
