SMU to face another mobile quarterback

Post by PonyPride »

When East Carolina knocked off Virginia Tech, it was due in large part to the play — specifically the running ability — of backup quarterback James Summers.

Found this in the Washington Times:

GREENVILLE, N.C. — James Summers accounted for three touchdowns, with two on the ground in a huge rushing performance, to help East Carolina beat Virginia Tech, 35-28, on Saturday.

The backup quarterback ran for 169 yards in a bigger-than-expected role amid rainy conditions, going from the change-of-pace option behind Blake Kemp to the guy powering the Pirates (2-2) to their first home win against the Hokies (2-2) in 23 years.

Have they made the decision to start Summers over Kemp ? If Summer can't throw they will be in a UNT situation where you have a QB that can run but can't throw. He only threw 8 passes last week.

he will run for 200 on 14 carries-Yenga will have 14 tackles

I've watched the big play highlite videos and I've watched 1St Half video highlites-I'm really not seeing the DLine get manhandled like some are suggesting. I'm seeing our LBs not being able to fill holes and LBs, star and DBs unable to tackle in open space

On Evaluating The Two Quarterback System:
"I look at it as a great opportunity for our team. You've got two really talented guys that play the position and do it a little bit differently. They make each other better with their abilities. We'll continue to use them. They're great teammates in the support of one another. In James' (Summers) interview, the first thing he did was compliment Blake (Kemp) and in Blake's interview he complimented James. I'm very proud of that aspect. We'll keep using both."

On If Blake Kemp Will Remain The Starting Quarterback:
"We will keep integrating both in practice and games. You're talking about two guys who had no idea they would be playing quarterback right now and both have stepped in. You have to be patient with James (Summers). Everyone was trying to rush that. You don't rush that. You want kids to have as much success as possible. He was ready, but Dave Nichol did a great job of prepping him in practice. It's the same thing with Blake. Blake had a year under Shane so he's a little bit further ahead with the offense. We'll keep using both of them. You have to learn in coaching that flexibility and being able to change is not a weakness, it's a strength when you learn how to do it. We have this system, but also, we're able to adjust to it and do what your guys do. It's like a puzzle. You put the round peg in the round hole."

That's what I saw during the game as well. The DLine held their ground, so when they were able to make a tackle it was a minimal gain. But the LBs didn't even miss tackles a lot of times - they were nowhere to be found until the play was 15 yards downfield. No second level blocking, just no LB.

That said, there is some blame on the DEs for sure, because they were diving in at the RB in the zone read and abandoning their responsibility to take the QB. So when he kept or there was a counter, we were completely off balance. The LBs take the RB also and take themselves completely out of the play.

DE's were getting blocked and sealed off. Their tackles quieted our DE's.

In his teleconference Morris identified continued deficiencies in the secondary and at LB that have been repeated all season long. Those are the positions that he indicates he is considering switching personnel and he did say removing redshirts. That's what I see DB and LB are the big problems

Gotta disagree with Stallion on this one. The D line isn't getting manhandled cause there is no need to manhandle our D line. We have to improve there lane discipline. Our D line, in its youth and excitement to make big plays, are losing lane assignments and contain. This opens huge holes that even a great LB couldn't fill. Our DEs often pushed up field too far and allowed a running lane to open. Our DEs on the opposite side of a run all too often trail a play as if they want to make a tackle and on the cut back are in no position to maintain containment. And on the pass rush our D line just simply loses rush lane discipline too often.

Our D linemen often take terrible angles for a tackle. When an outside should angle is essential, they take the inside angle and pop, the runner bounces outside cause we are not in a position to contain. These are inexperience and youth mistakes.

And they put unrealistic expectations on our LB.

Contain running QBs, make them run between the DEs and have the D tackles maintain land discipline. Then watch LBs to see if they can clean up.

I know he is as far as the DE contain. They are consistently being out flanked. The one time I saw one remain outside, he closed so late and at a bad angle the runner turned inside and ran free. And then there was no LB filling. They need some work and discipline.
