Dallas First/Second Round 2018
I was doing a little research to see where the NCAA Tournament sites are in the coming years and saw that Dallas is hosting one in 2018 at the AAC. The hosting sponsor will be the Big 12 which makes sense since their hq is in Las Colinas/Irving but I really think SMU would be right in trying to co-sponsor (or solely sponsor) one in the future. It's a long shot now to have the one in 2018 since it is already posted but this should be something the athletics program should try to get in the future! Georgia Tech is hosting a regional in 2017 in Atlanta and they have 1000 less students than we do. With a good team now too? It would be a nice pairing to help our school.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but:ATXMustang wrote:I was doing a little research to see where the NCAA Tournament sites are in the coming years and saw that Dallas is hosting one in 2018 at the AAC. 1) What are the advantages of being a host?
2) What are the costs of being a host?
I really don't know.
Also, you should look at Georgia Tech's enrollment again

Re: Dallas First/Second Round 2018
Georgia Tech Enrollment is listed on google as a little over 10,000: https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=c ... ch&es_th=1. But yeah, once you account for all students, their website states more like 22,000 both grad and undergrad so, point taken.
The costs incurred from the sponsorship would depend on who SMU would partner with (ie the city of Dallas, local businesses, the Cubes' companies etc.). Sales and costs would be split among the partners obviously but from what I've checked out (albeit mostIy about the economic impact of hosting the final four) I think the revenue generated would be outweighed by the intrinsic value of working with the local community and having the SMU basketball brand extended by those who attend the event and see the job SMU does hosting. Monetarily it isn't a crazy boost but it could be used to solidify the point that SMU is dallas' college basketball team. It would be cool to see peruna on the corner of an NCAA court as well haha

One thing about being a "host" is that your team cannot play there...
So this year, since the BIG12 is the host for OKC and not OU, OU can play there but in Aimes iowa since ISU is the host, ISU cannot play there.

Re: Dallas First/Second Round 2018
But in theory smu could pull a duke/Greensboro (only closer) and play at that regional right? NCAA will never allow that but it would be glorious
Re: Dallas First/Second Round 2018
There is definitely a rule against a team playing on its home court in the (men's) NCAA tourney. I am not aware of a host school having to be sent elsewhere. Ames might be a problem because they are using ISU's home court.okcponyfan wrote:One thing about being a "host" is that your team cannot play there...

Someone else posted about Duke & Greensboro. The ACC is the host for Greensboro NCAA rounds, not Duke or UNC.

I believe the rule is that you can't play a tourney game on a court where you play more than 4 home games.Dukie wrote:There is definitely a rule against a team playing on its home court in the (men's) NCAA tourney. Arena. A few years ago Villanova avoided playing a ton of games at the NBA Arena in Philly for this very reason.RGV Pony wrote:Arena or city?CalallenStang wrote:I believe the rule is that you can't play a tourney game on a court where you play more than 4 home games.Dukie wrote: There is definitely a rule against a team playing on its home court in the (men's) NCAA tourney. I am lost here. Hypothetically the final 4 is in Fedex Arena and Memphis gets to the final 4. Do they forfeit?
All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Re: Dallas First/Second Round 2018
Final four venues have to hold a minimum of 60,000 I believe.

Final Four venues are an exception, I think. Same for Dayton playing at home in the First Four.mrydel wrote:I am lost here. Hypothetically the final 4 is in Fedex Arena and Memphis gets to the final 4. Do they forfeit?

Sometimes a top team may be a short drive away from its games; in 2006 Villanova played its first and second round games in Philadelphia at an arena where they had played three games that year, one fewer than the four required for a site to be considered a "home court" for a team
