A streak is over! 30 years later

Post by newshound »

We had lost 12 straight season-opening games on the road, dating back to 1986 at Rice. Wow. 30 YEARS! And really only close in one them (1998 at Rice). So, consider this another small milestone for the program. It wasn't pretty at times last night, but it was a season-opener. And we are 1-0. Baby steps.

1986 WON at Rice 45-3
---------------------------
1991 LOSS at Arkansas 17-6
1994 LOSS at Arkansas 34-14
1997 LOSS at Ole Miss 23-15
1998 LOSS at Rice 23-17 OT
2001 LOSS at La Tech 36-6
2003 LOSS at Texas Tech 58-10
2006 LOSS at Texas Tech 35-3
2008 LOSS at Rice 56-27
2010 LOSS at Texas Tech 35-27
2011 LOSS at Texas A&M 46-14
2012 LOSS at Baylor 59-24
2014 LOSS at Baylor 45-0
---------------------------
2016 WON at North Texas 34-21

The cycle is over, hopefully we can now enjoy 30 years of success.

Didn't Roy Rios missed a field goal that could have won the game?

Something that really stood out in this list is not only did we lose all the season openers but starting in 2001, I couldn't help but notice the margins of loss. There is only one year we were even close.

Team certainly looks like they are ready for the speed of the game. During the June years, they always seemed to not be ready for "game" speed after not going full speed during practice.

Live tackling in practice and better recruits sure help.

You know what they say. If you can't beat em, schedule the worst team in fbs you can.

That strategy is junk - just ask Mississippi State.

I just remembered that David Richards, father of current OL/TE Tony Richards, played tackle for us in that 1986 Rice victory.

Just watched pony excess for the 59th time on espnu and saw all you old effers on there. I remember watching Clements go to vote at Bradfield Elementary in that clip from 1986. And attending the soccer homecoming in 1988.
