Coasters!?
So in the mail today I got my weekly solicitation for more money, along with 2 coasters to thank me for my past support. Paper coasters, like a restaurant throws away hundreds of every night. I'm not sure if this is just comically inept or insulting.
Maybe for a few thousand more I can get some SMU toilet paper.

So what did you expect? Are you supporting the program, or do you want your butt kissed?
Thanks. Now cough up some dough and pull your weight.

I think that applies to several of us.mrydel wrote:If I pulled my weight I would be bankrupt and have a hernia

Re: Coasters!?
The first one was for you to put your drink on while you wrote your check to SMU for a million dollars and the second was for your next drink while you waited to see how high your check would bounce.

SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Seems I recall in the past we got little plastic boxes with something inside like a calendar or something else. I do also recall many complaining about the expense that was wasted on such a fancy give away. Maybe they listened.

I can see why he would be pissed. My undergrad gives me a School Calendar and a postal sticker sheet with my name, address and school emblem on it. I'm pretty sure I don't donate as much as many of you. I'm sure the gifts get better with each tier you donate as well. While its a nice gesture, I'm pretty sure it helps with donations as well--I donate every year and all my mail utilizes these postal stickers.mrydel wrote:Seems I recall in the past we got little plastic boxes with something inside like a calendar or something else. Donations obviously helps with money towards the school but it also helps with rankings. Alumni giving is 5% for US News & Report. Donations are key because most of it goes towards the operation costs for school--aka financial aid for current students and faculty compensation.
If anything, people should complain on the amount R. Gerald Turner is making. Maybe all the alumni gifts is going towards his salary. The gifts can be a waste, but its little compared to all the waste that goes on at most colleges--bloated administration etc. At least it helps with school pride.
