Tulane acceptance rate drops to 17%

Post by tristatecoog »

To make Greenwich Pony mad...not sure if Tulane is a peer or aspirant school:

Moving from 30 percent to 17 percent in just two years, Tulane’s acceptance rate has plummeted since 2015. Two factors have contributed to this rapid rise in selectivity: a dramatic increase in the number of applications and an increasing number of students who accept offers of admission to the school. The university received 32,006 applications for Fall 2016, according to U.S. News, followed by 35,605 applications for Fall 2017 and 38,813 applications for Fall 2018.

Seriously, it's quite interesting how TU can improve so dramatically. It has done a remarkable job since 2005 (Katrina).

Nah, good for Tulane! They SHOULD be a peer institution, but sadly they are aspirational. I don't begrudge the success of other schools. I get annoyed because despite great promise, we seem to be stagnant, make really questionable decisions and miss opportunities. It is doubly galling considering what we seem to pay our top administrators for mediocre results.
Support the Commitment! We're all SMU Mustangs fans- we should all be committed!

Yeah, I didn't think you'd begrudge Tulane its good results but be annoyed by a peer's relatie success. How can a rather similar private, suburban school improve so dramatically in a couple years? Surely there are some peers that are doing worse but it's instructive to learn from the ones that are doing better. It's certainly not due to Tulane's great athletics. It has a smaller endowment than SMU and is in the midst of a $1B campaign. SMU completed its $1B+ campaign a while back.

Some say SMU isn't do enough to game the ranking system (e.g., smaller class sizes, faculty resources, etc.) and maybe being solidly top 50 is helping TU draw more applications.

Not sure if it's a material factor, but their revenue sports have been trending upward. Good for them
