Justin Isham

Post by Dark Horse »

What has happened to Isham? This is not meant as a slam, because I think he's immensely talented. But he has disappeared lately. No points and one shot in 18 minutes against Fresno? At the beginning of the year, I thought he might be the star of the team -- he scored pretty big in early games, and seemed to make the key defensive play in several games. Now he's hesitant to shoot, and seems afraid to make a mistake. He's got great athletic ability, and his shot got a lot better going into this season, so he's a lot more than just a leaper who can dunk. How can he get back on track? If there's any chance of a run into the WAC tournament, he has to be part of it.

Isham is having the same issues he had last season. He plays very well in short bursts. . .and then totally (and I mean totally) disappears for 5,6,7 games in a row. Fact is, Isham is talented and a great leaper, but he is not a difference making basketball player.

The announcer (Allen Stone?) said he hurt his shoulder, although he didn't say which one or how badly. Don't know which game, either. (Fresno game maybe?) Not sure if he's gun-shy with his shot because of it.

how soon they forget. As a soph, Justin had the highest shooting percentage of any guard on the team. He's always done a good shot with shot selection, but it suddenly seems the only shot he likes are layups and dunks. Don't know if it's an injury thing, or confidence, or maybe a little of both. What I do know is this team needs more scoring from Justin to regain that mid-December form.

Isham's outside shot always makes me a little jumpy, if only because his mechanics often are so inconsistent. One shot, he'll go up with his shoulders square to the basket, the next, he's facing 90 degrees to the side and shooting off to his side .... hence the inconsistency in his accuracy. You're right, though, we need him to regain his form to make a run in the WAC tournament. Brian Miller has come on a little bit of late, and the two of them, plus Hopkins, could give us three guards who can score. We've had some success in the past as a perimeter-based offensive team, and with a return to form by Isham, we could again.
