SMU applications

Post by tristatecoog »

Any of you have recent experience with kids or other relatives applying to SMU?

My daughter is applying. Her friend with a 1500 SAT is applying because she’s heard about big merit scholarships.

A friend from Sugarland’s kid didn’t get into SMU for this fall so she’s headed to TCU. Turned down Baylor.

I’m intrigued by all the mailings from Tulane to encourage applying for free. They seem have a great admissions operation.

Got a good year lined up. Everything has gone toward ACT. Average ACT for this incoming class is a 30.5 with a class size of over 1500. A SAT score of 1500 should garner really good scholarship money unless there are grade issues..ie, an adjusted grade point of 2.5 or less. Doubt that is the case but it happens more than you would think...

Believe she has a 4.0 UW and about a 4.4 wtd GPA. May go early decision to a top 3 public university so it'll be interesting. Not sure what major.

Regarding ACT, good thing my kid doesn't want Cox or Lyle.

It seems that no one in my family thinks about applying to SMU anymore.
One who was a high school valedictorian graduated from an Oklahoma U and then the Houston medical for dentistry.
Another became an eye doctor. Another is at ACU in pre-med.
Texas A&M grad in teaching.
A Texas A&M freshman.
A Pepperdine ministry then OU law school grad.
A couple more lawyers.
One is at Baylor.
One is at Oxford.
These are all cousins' kids. I can mention SMU and NO.

Probably too expensive for a lot of people...especially when cheaper alternatives exist.

Have her call. Shows she’s not applying just to apply. My nephew set up appointments at Vandy, TCU and SMU and got full rides to all

Worked for nephew although he chose tcu but he promised me SMU for grad school

Chose full ride to TCU over Vandy? What was the hook? Better viewing?
Yeah, I totally agree that free apps only serve to generate more apps. It doesn't help Tulane, Baylor or wherever determine how interested the applicant really is. They have to fill out optional essays, call, visit, etc. or they're doomed even with super high stats.

ponyboy, I suppose our kids know each other if you still live in UP and senior goes to public school.

Tcu over SMU and vandy? Not sure I’m buying that. Doesn’t seem smart at all. Tcu student quality is waaaay below SMU or vandy.
