After a second look, the pass coverage wasn't that bad. What helped Tulane was the lack of a pass rush.

RIght before the play, I told those watching the game with me that TU had SMU right where they wanted 'em. 3rd and impossible. Except those of us that have watched post DP SMU know 4th and 49 from one's own 1 yard line is an easy 1st down against SMU. SMU defenses have two traditions since the DP. Never ever under any circumstance set the edge and allow 3rd and 4th and forever to be seasy 1st downs. I wasn't shocked. Disappointed we couldn't break tradition, but certainly not shocked.

Yes, and the previous play, the QB scrambled and got them into easy FG range. That is why we had to accept the penalty, and it is also why we didn't have a pass rush. Everyone stayed in their lanes and we had a spy on the QB to keep it from happening again. The coverage was decent, but I think we found out that the frosh QB for Tulane is going to be pretty good when he grows up a little.
