Most devastating loss since _____ ?????

Post by smuhype »

As an Alum of SMU and having watched in person for 30 plus years, I am not sure I can name many other losses that hurt like this one tonight folks...

Keep in mind that we all need to keep pinching ourselves as for years and years we never had ANY games that really mattered, that had rankings involved, and post season stakes on the line. And because of that we are in this position to have losses that hurt.

But this one hurts worse than any that I can remember --- including @ Memphis last year, but I was there than night and it just feels different that tonight where we blow a 21-0 on the road in a huge spot.

Not to mention our Defense played well and hard enough to win.

Sick --- No second shot at Cincinnati, no extra hype for next weekend game vs. Houston, probably knocked out of Top 25...

Help me find another loss that compares....?

Losing to Florida Atlantic 52-28 in the Boca Raton Bowl last December was pretty embarrassing, especially because it was the only College Football game being televised at that moment.

That's what I was thinking. Bowl game was far more embarrassing.

We've had too many to count. I was at the CUSA Championship game in Orlando when UCF took us down. That one hurt because we were actually playing for a championship. As far as losing a game late and snatching a loss from the jaws of victory, what about the bowl game vs McMahon's BYU team? Far too many blowout losses to put them in the devastating category but this SMU team is not quite ready for prime time and to compete for another conference championship. The Memphis loss last year was far more hyped and really stung because a competent special teams would have made the difference. Even the Cincinnati game this year was brutal.

How about a non-win? A tie to a poor to mediocre Texas Tech team in 1982 put a chink in
our armor, and was an excuse to name Penn St. with a loss as national champion.
May the forth be with us.

We beat Tech on the Bobby Leach lateral return. The tie was the next game with Arkansas, a top 10 team. There was no excuse for the Penn State favoritism.

Penn State, who were anointed as National Champions in 1982, lost one game that year - to Alabama 42-21.

Oops, that's right, I'm getting senile.

TT would've tied us without the run back on the sneaky pass lateral to Leach near the sideline.

OK, how bout a near tie to poor to mediocre TT?

That and the Frisco Bowl games were dreadful. I guess Boca was more embarrassing because we had less excuses (Morris leaving and his entire staff). This one felt pretty embarrasing because the other team basically gift us points in the first quarter just so they can show us how easy it was to beat us.

It has been pretty clear all season that our OL isn't up to championship level.

After watching Memphis and Cincy, it was pretty clear that Tulsa and Houston were going to be challenges.

Weather, penalties, and good defense are great equalizers.

The most devastating loss since losing to Rice 31-27 in 2006 with a bowl game on the line. That one still stings. We've had many!

Since the last time the opponent made lots of mistakes and did their best to give the game away, but our guys made even more. Which was the Cincinnati game few weeks ago.
