Facility Needs for BB, Practice Courts, Volleyball

Post by Water Pony »

According to this DMN article, SMU needs to commit to the renovation of Moody very soon. With one or two practice courts needed, the needs of Volleyball, intramurals, non-athletic events, concerts, etc. overwhelm Moody.

The capital demands of athletics is huge and keeping up with the Jones (BCS schools) isn't easy.

If we want to excel in sports (particularly as we field fewer teams, I am sad to say), the ones we commit to need support, dollars and facilities to compete on a national level, including my own favortie, Swimming & Diving.

How do we fast track Moody Renovation?

This isn't a new development in college athletics. I was just at FSU this weekend... I swear, half of the campus is falling apart, but the stadium is getting a massive facelift.. I'd venture to say that it is now one of the finest looking stadiums in the country. The practice fields are top-notch, the basketball training facility (opened spring 03) is INCREDIBLE and by far their biggest asset to recruiting. Like Moody, the Leon County Civic Center is overbooked because the city also uses it.

Not that I want SMU to shift all major funding to athletics like FSU seems to be doing at the moment... but their facilities needed a major upgrade to keep recruiting, winning, and bringing in money.

It's just that the current administration's thinking is more along the lines of, "lets have a bake sale."
