That list doesn't specify competition. Jankovich has routinely scheduled the softest non-conference schedule to pad his record.

Re: SMU BB Coaches Record
I'll use this season as an example. In our non-conference schedule so far, there is only one game we should have lost and that was at Oregon. If we had won against Missouri, which was an embarrassing loss, we would have faced Florida State which would have been an acceptable loss. We did not and then lost to Loyola Marymount which was not an expected loss either. So far, despite a 10-3 record we are performing below expectations. Granted, Jankovich has been much better than Doherty as he has avoided losses to SC Upstate, but records are relative to who you play. If we played Michigan State, Duke, Gonzaga, etc. I'd expect us to have a lesser record. Jankovich loves padding his record with wins over Northwestern State.

Re: SMU BB Coaches Record
plus his winning percentage does not reflect all those wins using LB's players..
And that is significant.

Re: SMU BB Coaches Record
Jank's high winning percentage is due in large part to the roster he inherited from Larry Brown and remember he got 9 wins with Brown's team while Larry was serving his suspension. We'll see if he reaches anywhere near the longevity Doc Hayes had. I still consider Doc the best coach SMU ever had and it's hard for me to imagine anyone surpassing his win total. Would love to see it but just not expecting it.
Re: SMU BB Coaches Record
Frankly 300 wins at SMU is not that impressive given the long history of the program. I would hope that at some point we land a coach that wins 500 games at SMU.
Re: SMU BB Coaches Record
Is the AD or coach responsible for establishing the schedule? We are certainly not alone in scheduling cupcake teams at the beginning of the season to pad the wins. The bright side—maybe it will help Lil Ricky get a new job!

Re: SMU BB Coaches Record
At 17 wins a year it will take Jank another 11 years or so at SMU to catch Doc Hayes. Certainly possible especially with a few 23+ win seasons sprinkled in but probably not likely.Charleston Pony wrote:Jank's high winning percentage is due in large part to the roster he inherited from Larry Brown and remember he got 9 wins with Brown's team while Larry was serving his suspension. Re: SMU BB Coaches Record
John Shumate with the 2nd worst winning percentage .398 took us to the 93 SWC championship,
and our last NCAA Tournament appearance until LB in 2015.
15 of Sonny's 30 wins could probably be due to Chad's recruiting.
Go figure

May the forth be with us.

More like 39 of the wins (if you add the Brown benched by NCAA wins).Arkpony wrote:30 of Yank’s wins should be in LB’s win column.
Then his record win % is pretty much same as Dement
And Dement's teams played a tougher schedule. For instance - the 96-97 team had to play 4 top 10 matchups- 6 top 25 and lost all six. Went 16-6 vs rest of schedule that included some pretty good teams (Ok St, TCU, BYU, Utep, Tulsa, etc).
And when Wac schedule was weaker in later years after the top teams left (Utah, NMex, BYU)- we stacked a lot of B12, B10, SEC, and ACC into the non-con schedule.
