J. Tubbs' recruiting success since leaving SMU

Post by Stampede »

As further proof of Coach Tubbs' ability to recruit, here is the last two years signees:

Drew Lavender (McDaonald All American, and Brandon Foust, both from Columbus, Ohio. Beat Ohio State on both.

Larry Turner, 6'11" higly recruited center from Bridgeton Maine Academy .

Highly recruited center from Redlands Community College, Taj Gray, 6'9" froward. 2nd team "All American" and "Player of the Year Region II" his freshman year. Offered by the entire Big 12, Louiville, Arkansas and Florida among others.

Not to mention, Jerimis Smith of Ft. Worth, wanted to commit to the Sooners last July, but OU waited on Taj Gray and would not take Jerimis.

Tubbs recruited and was responsible for 4 out of 5 total recruits OU signed the past two years.
Tubbs can flat out "get 'em". I am all for a good search but this search should be a "no brainer" for SMU.

I'm definitely not questioning this, but more interested in how you know he actually was directly responsible in four out of the five recruits?

I think the response by Sampson in this article is odd. Don't talk to him unless you're going to hire him? I'm all for looking out for the guy, but SMU would be doing a disservice by not considering several candidates of which Tubbs would have to be considered a strong candidate.

I think Sampson is telling SMU that talking to Tubbs in March is a distraction to the team and don't cause a distraction unless you are serious. I think that is fair.

My problem with Tubbs is that it appears that he is not Sampsons' no. 1 assistant. If he is, let me know, but it doesn't appear that way. I confess I don't watch a lot of Sooner basketball.

I guess I always have a problem taking an assistant that is nto a top assistant in any sport. I'd be against taking somebody's quarterbacks' coach, too. If the coach doesn't have the confidence in a guy to make him the top assistant, then why should we have the confidence in him to be our top guy?

Just voicing a concern.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Tubbs is the least tenured of Sampsons assistants that may be why many percieve HE is not the head assistant coach

Let's be honest, Tubbs was brought to OU for one reason, to recruit. Sampson didnt hire him to be the top assistant or for his x and o coaching. He is a great recruiter and that is what Sampson needed on his staff. As for Tubbs coaching ability, he was successful at a high level in HS and he has 10 years under his belt as a major college assistant. Dement rarely let any of his assistants handle practices or make coaching decisions, which is one of the reason I believe Tubbs finally departed. A perfect example of this is Lineburg. What was the view of Lineburg and the other assistants coaching ability one month ago?? You probably didnt have one or you viewed them as making poor game time decisions and not being able to develop players. It was purely speculative, as it is with Tubbs. Bottom line is that Tubbs is a helluva recruiter and can relate very well to his players. Also, he's not a "one of the guys" kind of coach as some have questioned. He will demand respect, and get it. You dont get the kind of respect he has earned in the very tough areas of south Dallas by being a push over....believe me. I have no doubt that he deserves a chance and I really think it would be a mistake to choose someone else unless a very qualified and young candidate comes along
