Preston Stone is the highest-rated player to ever come to SMU. So we have two quarterbacks we feel we can win with. If you have a 2 quarterbacks, you have chance. Having Mordecai and Stone will allow us to spend time trying fill those holes so we don't miss a beat on offense

With all due respect, Preston Stone is NOT the highest rated player to EVER to come to SMU. Since Al Gore invented the internet, maybe. SMU fans shouldn't disrespect the Doak Walkers, Eric Dickersons, and Russell Carters that came to SMU by implying Preston is our best recruit ever only because 247, Rivals and other recruiting services didn't exist back then. If you want to qualify "in the last decade" or something, fine but please don't say "best player ever," it's just not true. At least hopefully yet.

Pull the Blue Chip Texas Top 100 list and see where Dickerson and James and McIlhenny were on that list. Compare to Preston, who was #17 in Texas. I honestly donΓÇÖt know the answer. I suspect Dickerson was top five, James top ten, and McIlhenny top fifty.

Dickerson was #1 in Texas (and the nation). James was #2 in Texas (#12 in the nation). Both would have been five stars.
Four star Preston Stone was #129 in the nation. SMU had at least eight signees in 1979 alone who were more highly rated. At #34 nationally, five star Camar Wheaton would have been the fifth-best recruit in 1979.

For anyone who has watched the ESPN 30 for 30 "Pony Excess" episode, as Ron Meyer described his recruiting philosophy: "I want kids who want to play in the NFL". I think the "should have been national championship team" that finished 2nd to Jo Pa's Ped State team had 14 future NFL players on it's 2-deep

Of course, 34 on one list might be 12 on another and 71 on another, but still -- wow.

A few years back, I got an opportunity at a party for Harvey Armstrong to just be the third guy in a conversation between Ron Meyer and Steve Endicott. All I asked was, how did you do it? For about twenty minutes, they answered the question.
