Things I won't miss from the past 20 years of SMU FB...

Post by peruna81 »

Scattershooting tonight while awaiting Thursday night...

Fires in the grass end zone
Liberty and Justice
Lei-covered coaches
Black uniforms honoring our opponent
Playing Navy and watching orthopedic surgeons swoon
Blue Mustang helmets
Full-tilt-boogie Chad
Only 4 concession stands open at Ford
Mighty Mustang Thunder

Miss anything?

Cut the lei guy a little slack. He raised our average Sagarin rating about 50 places. ~120 to ~70. Took us to our first bowl game in 25 years, and went 2-1 in bowls. Won a championship. Albeit a conference division championship.

I wonΓÇÖt miss being in the bottom 10
hasBennett forgetting more football than I ever knew
Getting stuffed on the 1 yard line against Rice to prevent our 6th win
a zero win season
hiring coaches who pulled for SMU as kids
May the forth be with us.

How many of you remember the "Noid"?

The SMU mascot that resembled the Dominoes Pizza Noid. Ridiculous!

Don't forget the winless TCU team that kept us from going bowling. Ugh, that was a low point.

I was at that debacle. A little more than 20 years since then, but if we're going to expand the timeline how about the infamous "all in" rush against Texas Tech.

Have to agree with this. JJ was instrumental in raising SMU's profile back in that time frame. Just a shame he was such a lazy recruiter. I really think he got so full of himself that he thought kids would want to come here and play for him so he didn't really have to work hard to sell SMU to them. If he had worked hard and had the commitment from the administration and boosters that we now have the whole "SMU to P5" objective might have been accomplished sooner

I agree with all of those EXCEPT the Great Fire on the Grassy Knoll. IMO, the fire added an element of excitement to an otherwise lackluster season. What other D1school tried to burn down their stadium in 2002? So, I'm taking that off the list and moving the Liberty and Justice debacle to a solid #1. How was that schitt EVER allowed to happen. Very, very embarrassing.

Liberty & justice. How time flies. I had to look them up. I want to believe it was done in good faith, but executed so poorly. I can't find game photos, but didn't they have cowboys riding them at games? They were rescued Mustangs blessed by Seminoles - see link. The latter part I never knew.

What a hoot.

The rain game that all rain games are measured against. Soaked shoes and socks. Water was getting through the seams of what up until then had been a very good raincoat.

Our crew went out the night before and bought rain suits and we sat through that debacle with whitewater cascading down the stands. I think we left at the start of the 4th quarter and caught the end on TV at the hotel...and saw that we hadn't missed anything by leaving when we did!
