Women's soccer shuts out Northwestern State, 2-0, in its home opener
DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women's soccer program earned its first win of the season by shutting out Northwestern State 2-0 on Sunday inside Washburne Stadium.
The Mustangs (1-1-0, 0-0-0 ACC) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. SMU was in complete control the entire game, outshooting Northwestern State (1-1-0, 0-0-0 SLC) 27-6 in total shots.
The Demons, who were coming off a 3-2 win over No. 19 Texas, did not record a shot on goal. SMU is now 6-0 all-time versus Northwestern State and has yet to concede a goal to the Demons, outscoring them 19-0.
Sophomore Sarah Bonnecaze got the ball rolling for the Mustangs early, scoring SMU's first goal of the season in the fifth minute of the game.
The Baton Rouge, Louisiana native executed an impressive display of applying pressure, sealing a pass from the NSU goalkeeper right in front of the goal and putting it in the back of the net. It was the sophomores' first career goal.
SMU continued to fire off shot after shot, tallying 17 in total, but the lead stayed 1-0 heading into the half. The Northwestern State goalkeeper did her part in keeping the game close, finishing with nine saves.
After Maura Yumul drew a foul inside the box in the 75th minute, freshman Lindsay Nicholson stepped up and extended the Mustangs' lead to 2-0, converting on a penalty kick. It was her first career goal and the first converted penalty kick for SMU since 2023.
SMU goalkeeper Aubrey Brown earned her first career win.
The 2-0 victory marked the 18th shutout for the Mustangs under Nelson.

SMU will travel just up the road to Denton, Texas on Thursday, August 24, to face North Texas. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. CT and will be aired on ESPN+.

In her fourth season as head coach of the Mustangs, Nicole Nelson is now 28-20-8 overall at SMU.
The 27 total shots are the second most in a game under Nelson. (31 vs Northwestern State 8/15/25).
The Mustangs are now 17-8-3 at home under Nelson.
The Mustangs are now 469-250-61 all-time in program history.
