Maryland earns spot on Comeback Player Of The Year watch list
NEW YORK CITY (SMU) – SMU tight end RJ Maryland earned a spot on the 2025 College Football Comeback Player of the Year Preseason Watch List, announced the College Sports Communicators (CSC) on Tuesday in a release.
In association with the Fiesta Bowl Organization and The Associated Press, CSC has presented this award in recognition of college football student-athletes for overcoming injury, illness or other circumstances. At the conclusion of each season, in a vote by a panel of college football writers, editors and sports information directors, three college football student-athletes are honored as Comeback Player of the Year Award winners at the Fiesta Bowl.
Maryland has been a driving force for the SMU offense since his freshman season in 2022. As a rookie, the tight end made appearances in every game, making six starts. Registering 28 receptions for 296 yards and six touchdowns, Maryland was named a College Football Network Freshman All-America Honorable Mention.
Dubbed All-AAC First Team and DCTF All-Texas Second Team in his sophomore campaign, Maryland posted five games with at least 50 yards receiving and tied for the most receiving touchdowns by a tight end in the country with seven.
Entering the 2024 season, Maryland had been named to multiple preseason accolades including DCTF Best Tight End, DCTF All-Texas Second Team Offense, Phil Steele Preseason All-ACC Third Team, Athlon Sports Preseason All-ACC Second Team Offense and the Mackey Award Preseason Watch List.
As a junior, the Texas native was explosive for the Mustangs. After registering a season-high eight catches and 162 yards in SMU's victory over Nevada on August 24, he was awarded ACC Receiver of the Week, becoming the first Mustang to ever earn the title. Also being named to the DCTF All-Texas Midseason Team, Maryland had 24 receptions for 359 yards and four touchdowns.
After starting in the first five games for the Mustangs, Maryland's dynamic season ended prematurely due to an injury. Despite being unable to play the remainder of the season, he still garnered All-ACC accolades.
Coming into the 2025 campaign, Maryland has received spots on the Phil Steele Preseason All-ACC Second Team, DCTF All-Texas First Team, Athlon Sports Preseason All-ACC Second Team and John Mackey Award Watch List.
