The BCS mess

Don't know how I could have missed some of the consternation going on among the four BCS bowls about the "piggy back" or 5th BCS game, but ESPN sports has some good commentaries about it. One writer wants to junk the whole BCS and go back to the old rating wars unless we have a true playoff system. I suggest that we let the Rose bowl have the Big 10 vs. the Pac 10; then pair the Big 12 vs. the SEC; have the ACC play the Big East; then have a bowl with the next two highest rated conference champions from among the C-USA, WAC, MWC, MAC, or Notre Dame. You wujld have an eight game Div. 1-A playoff that would make the NCAA a fortune and give the public what it wants.

Never happen. The BCS conferences would scream because they expect two or more of their members to go to the BCS bowls with their big pay-outs. It is hard for them to imagine the 5th bowl right now with the possibility that a "undeserving" non-BCS school would break in.
