Well, sure, a guy like McCown is looking like a genius today. But come on...in 999 out of 1,000 cases, is a kid who is having trouble cracking the starting lineup at WAKE FOREST (or SMU for that matter) ever going to have what the NFL is looking for anyway? Seriously. Throwing away a quality, respected, FREE (!) college degree tomorrow so you can play more football today is at best short-sighted. At worst, it's flat-out dumb. At the very least, it betrays a lack of proper guidance. I would definitely not characterize it as a genius move.

A little side note to this: Texas A$M transfer Dustin Long to Sam Houston State has been suspended 'indefinitely' from the team following an arrest in Huntsville last week by the campus police for suspected DWI. Another Div. 1-A transfer (Noah Allen from OU) looks like he may now get the nod as starting QB for the Bearkats.

Two Sam Houston State University football players have been suspended following their arrests early Wednesday morning.
Quarterback Dustin Long, 22, and tight end Boss Doucette, 21, were arrested early Wednesday morning in the 500 block of Bowers Blvd. by University Police Department officers.
Long, a senior from Port Neches-Groves, who transferred to SHSU this past spring from Texas A&M, was arrested and taken to the Walker County Jail and booked on the charge of driving while intoxicated.
Doucette, a junior from Mont Belvieu, was arrested and charged with public intoxication. According to the police report, Doucette approached officers after Long's vehicle was pulled over and began to interfere with their investigation.
SHSU director of athletics Bobby Williams said in a press release that both players have been suspended for a violation of athletic department and university policies. Long and Doucette are suspended until the SHSU Department Disciplinary Committee has the opportunity to review the situation and decide upon an appropriate action.
Long, 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, was the starting quarterback at Texas A&M during the 2002 season, and shared playing time last season with sophomore Reggie McNeal. He is expected to be SHSU's starting quarterback during the 2004 season.
Doucette, 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, saw limited playing time at tight end last year and also played on special teams.

I don't think throwing away a Wake degree for a scholarship at App. St. and more PT is a mistake. Sure, Wake is a better school than App. St., of course. What's wrong with a kid wanting to play some ball?
Side note: Delaware's Andy Hall couldn't make G-Tech's second team two years ago. He's on the Philadelphia Eagles roster right now.
