I'm in fly-over country. Southern Methodist gets me more recognition than SMU. I prefer Southern Methodist if for no other reason than it saves a good minute explanation of what SMU is. I think if you're in Texas it's SMU, out of Texas ............ not so much.

Late getting into this, but Missouri cancelled football series with Illinois for the same reasons. It was in St Louis and Mizzou wanted home games..........and the Kansas game took priority.

Back to Doak and suspension helmets.......just flipped the page of my President's high dollar contributor desk calendar..........and there's "Doak Walker, 1947" in a suspension helmet (can't tell color as photo is black and white) being chased by a fellow in a leather helmet looking very much ...

September 27, 1948 edition. Khaki pants, red jersey and red helmet, suspension.

My memory may be fuzzy too..............BUT the photo of Doak on the cover of Life was a red suspension helmet. ( I think). Must have been '48 or '49.

Fry's first year ('62) had red helmets, red jerseys and grey pants; replicated (Doak) late '40's uniforms.

Preston Pearson who played for the Cowboys never played college football. Basketball at Illinois.
NFL scout saw him against Wisconsin and he decked a player. Scout was impressed. My memory is that the Colts drafted him and he played In the NFL for many years. You never know.
