Remember Donnie Gilray?

Donnie was in Coach Caven's last scholarship draw. As with most of these youngsters, Phil Bennett ignored him and refused to help mentor him through some tough times.

Donnie eventually lost his scholarship - of his own accord.

He is now a US Marine in San Diego and has not put down football ...

One Game Critics

talk about a deer in the headlights look. i thought the poor kid was going to start crying next to JJ on the sideline between two different possessions. there was no leadership demonstrated on the field. it was void. not surprising, thats what happens with true freshman who cant really have built ...

Time to look ahead!

The first thing I envisioned when I heard the news was SMU in the top 25. It can happen. It's no secret that I knew that Bennett was not going to be able to make that happen. No slight against his football knowledge - he just didn't have "it" as a coach.

This would have not happened with the ...

One Accomplisment

The only good thing Phil has done here is to get us off the Bottom 10. Phil has only had one season better than the last season Mike Cavan had when he was fired. What has the hiring of Bennett and the firing of Cavan truly accomplished? Are we further along because of that move? "The Commitment ...

I heard that Bennett is gone if he doesn't get a bowl game this year. Any insider knowledge on that?

Congrats, UT

Yes, Vince Young, in his smooth strides, led the Longhorns to a much deserved victory!

What is just as impressive of Young's performance is Mack Brown. Did you see the smile and encouragement he gave to Pino when he shanked a 31 yard attempt? That doesn't happen at SMU. Perhaps our coach could ...

I must say that SMU fans here are very optimistic despite the record under Mr. Bennett. I knew when I met him that he was not a mentor type coach. Although the Ponies have played their hearts out every minute of every game, and they deserve more, I am not real surprised at the 6-30 record under ...

I have liked Chris since he kicked for Rowlett. He can nail'em with his left or right foot!

Funny, though, this same crowd was so against him when he got the scholarship.

He walked on and made the team at Texas A&M Kingsville, but hurt his knee. He is rehabbing from the surgery and will walk on a D-1 team next fall. He has the arm and the instinct. A joy to watch (and not just cuz he is my son.. )we go the rounds like fathers and young adult sons do, but his work on ...

Forgive me, PonyPa, for my ignorance. Who is your son? The only Don I'm aware of is Iaremia-Stansbury...another on the roster? Or perhaps last year?

RGV,

2002 Cavan recruit. He was among the first victims of Bennett's "cleaning house" moves. Lot of good came from it Both Bennett and my son ...

I wish Bennett would have given my son half a chance. Donnie didn't have big numbers in HS because of my military transfers, but he could read defenses like a book. He has instinct. I don't see how Bennett could be any worse off with or without my son.
