Re: Scout Story on (Not) Recruiting
Anybody know what kind of financial aid SMU could give to say a kid from a low-income family if it wasn't a scholarship? Would it be as much or more with a pell grant than what a scholarship would provide? TCU seems to be getting more guys walking on and playing and then being put on scholarship their senior year after contributing or starting for a year or two. Of course it backfired on them last year with a senior starting lb who was put on scholarship his sr year after playing and being a Big 12 all-conference for two years and quit after picture day. good for him.

I hope you are right. Maybe you see something I don't.ponyboy wrote:Disagree. I believe we will exceed expectations in 2014 and get to a bowl game in June's last year.

That is correct. June Jones will in his last year on the Hilltop be taking the Mustangs to a bowl game.

how about using some of that fortune-telling ability and giving us some stock tips for 2015 too...ponyboy wrote:That is correct. June Jones will in his last year on the Hilltop be taking the Mustangs to a bowl game.

Re: Scout Story on (Not) Recruiting
Here's my reasoning on why we'll make a bowl game in 2014, even with suspect talent. Taken from another thread from yesterday:
ponyboy wrote: ...he builds programs, he doesn't sustain them. He's a guy who takes joy in doing things in a very odd way and as is tired and bored of us as we are of him. He left Hawaii at the top for a very real reason having nothing to do with lack of commitment from the university. He was bored. He may do the same with us, take us to a totally unexpected level in his last year.
And East Stang's comment, which I thought was spot on:ponyboy wrote:He enjoys the thrill of turnaround done in his way and is not a long term sustainer of programs. That's a big reason, not the only reason but a big one, why ASU was so attractive to him. He'd achieved significant success here and was ready for the next fix.
I really believe he'll leave us at the top, having kept his reputation intact and smelling good.EastStang wrote:I will reiterate what I've said before- June can pull out a W when he needs it most- see Compass Bowl drubbing after ASU fiasco, 2012 Tulsa game to get bowl eligible and ensuing Hawaii Bowl beatdown, and he almost did it again last year against #15 UCF with his second and third string QBs.
A 4-8 season wouldn't surprise me in the least, but neither would a 7-5 season with a whacky upset over TCU or something. Say what you want about his commitment to recruiting and selling the program here, but he's a very good Xs and Os coach

Re: Scout Story on (Not) Recruiting
Following the pattern of what he did at Hawaii, I predicted five and seven last year, actually. Check out what happens at Hawaii after five and seven. I'm not going there, 11 wins or anything. But I am predicting a bowl game in 2014Lebanese4Life wrote:ponyboy what did u predict last season?

Scout Story on (Not) Recruiting
Reputation?!?! His rep is [deleted]. His rep cost him the ASU job. He's mailed it in ever since. He can't coach 'em up to make up for a complete implosion of 1 recruiting class and a lack of effort in recruiting ever since. If he were going to have one more run, he'd have loaded up on jucos, or at least looked into the possibility.
June sat around all 2013 hoping to get fired so he could get $2m to not coach and when that didn't happen, he said, "Well cr@p, I'd better go ofer a bunch of scholarships and full up the class."
He's going to pull a Bennett and bad mouth SMU as he walks out the door; this time to a dutiful Rick Goslin who will nod knowingly as he types every word down and Goslin writes a column about how SMU can't get it done in football and is a basketball school now. And it will all be BS because June didn't try!!!
This is what is going to happen. Mark my words.

Scout Story on (Not) Recruiting
His reputation is as an alchemist and program turner. He certainly does not have a reputation for being a long-term sustainer type. I'd like to think that he'll take the high road as he heads out of town, but the Goselin thing actually does carry a tiny bit of plausibility.
Whatever the case, I'm calling for a bowl game

Re: Scout Story on (Not) Recruiting
When has he ever taken the high road when dealing with SMU. He didn't even take the high road with his beloved UH. He said they didn't give him the resources there. He got the resources here and squandered those along with a lot of good will built from bringing us back. He could have done something special here if he had tried for more than a few of years.
