The Vast Majority of Successful Coaches DO NOT Call Playsa discussion I had with a Baylor alum this weekend peaked my interest about whether Philip Montgomery is just Art Briles' little buddy or is he a big part of the offense. Turns out Art Briles has turned most of the play calling to Montgomery. In fact most Top Coaches do NOT call plays. I think that's something to remember because everybody seems to want to hire Coordinators and pans the manager coach like Brown. Just remember you are not hiring a Coordinator but the guy who runs the program which requires different skill sets. Here's a run down of the top national programs and who is calling plays but the following is an excerpt regarding Briles:
Baylor Coach Art Briles is one of the brilliant offensive minds in coaching. His Bears have scored 19 touchdowns in two games this season and lead the nation with a 69.5 points-per-game average. Yet even Briles has turned over most of the play calling to coordinator Philip Montgomery. "I've really backed off here the last year or two," Briles said. "I think it's really helped me and it's helped us as a football team. It's allowed me to do more things." http://articles.latimes.com/2013/sep/17 ... g-20130918 "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

Re: The Vast Majority of Successful Coaches DO NOT Call PlaThanks for letting us know that Montgomery calls most of the plays. Put him near the top of coaching candidate list now.

Re: The Vast Majority of Successful Coaches DO NOT Call PlaAccording to the article on Yahoo he is very weak in recruiting. I realize the assistants are the ones more involved but if he actually "doesn't like" national attention would he be able to attract the type of assistants he would need.

Could you post the link to the yahoo article? I would like to read it. #HammerDown
The Vast Majority of Successful Coaches DO NOT Call PlaysI am too old for that capability. There is a Yahoo article about Mack Brown as a possible candidate for SMU. Within that article is a link to a list of possible SMU candidates (all the ones we have discussed) with brief backgrounds.
It is an SB Nation article if that helps. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand

Re: The Vast Majority of Successful Coaches DO NOT Call PlaFunny that this article was found and posted. Some of my colleagues and I were talking about this as well.
Yet, it didn't really register to me (e.g. due to my stupidity), that a good recruiter/play caller isn't necessarily a good "head" coach.
Re: The Vast Majority of Successful Coaches DO NOT Call Pla
Philip Montgomery: Offensive coordinator, Baylor He commands almost no media attention, and in fact appears to avoid the spotlight. Former Baylor quarterback Nick Florence told ESPN last year that Montgomery "doesn't like" national attention. That demeanor might be reflected in recruiting, where despite Baylor's star-studded classes, Montgomery has been credited only with a handful of modest recruits. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: The Vast Majority of Successful Coaches DO NOT Call Pla
Kevin Sumlin sure was. #HammerDown
Re: The Vast Majority of Successful Coaches DO NOT Call PlaOK a lot of Coordinators play more of a supervisory role in recruiting. Do you really want them out on Thursday and Friday Nite recruiting or working on the game plan. You do want them participating in the recruit evaluations though

Re: The Vast Majority of Successful Coaches DO NOT Call PlaJust reporting what I read. If quality assistants can be hired, my idiot dog can be head coach. But it sounds as if he shies from the limelight and that is not the typical ego of a head coach. I am putting my faith in Hart.

Re: The Vast Majority of Successful Coaches DO NOT Call Pla
Didn't Kingsbury and Holgorsen call plays for Sumlin at Houston?
Re: The Vast Majority of Successful Coaches DO NOT Call PlaWhat do we want, play callers or guys who will install offenses?
I'd like a coach that will bring an offense to town, not just call plays.
Re: The Vast Majority of Successful Coaches DO NOT Call Pla
I was talking about him being an OC before being a head coach. #HammerDown
