I've found marketing people and most B school types are rather unskilled at just about anything "quantitative". As to the topic of this thread; Stallion is correct around 90 percent of the time.
Re: Stallion Was RightHe's a pretty deeply insightful guy. He shows his rear end sometimes, but very well informed guy.

Re: Stallion Was Right
CP, really dislike that narrative of, "If only X occurred, maybe JJ would have done a better job recruiting and all would have been well in SMU land' X can be many things. In your example, if only LB arrived earlier. Few on this board despised JJ more than me, but for all my criticisms, I would never call him stupid. He knew full well what he was and wasn't doing. He didn't recruit because he didn't give a damn. Nothing was going to change him.
Re: Stallion Was RightWe're missing a very important fact here. JJ"s system is such that he never really recruited anywhere, preferring a passive system of mostly video evaluation. I'm not saying that's good and I"m not saying that's bad. But he didn't really quit recruiting -- recruits quit coming to him when it was discovered he didn't want to be here.

Re: Stallion Was Right
About the facts? It's been well known from day one that that was JJ's m.o., thus the videotapes jokes over the years. He never changed and when the stream died up after ASU, we were toast talent-wise.
Re: Stallion Was RightPB, the definition of recruiting is hitting the road and scouting players. Not sitting in your office and receiving film.
Re: Stallion Was RightAgreed. JJ didn't recruit. Totally different method than any I've ever heard of. Not defending, not criticizing. But I will say this: The only way the method could possibly work is if you have a steady stream of interested athletes. That stream dried up with the ASU fiasco. And boy are we ever paying for it right now.
Re: Stallion Was Right
That is somewhat re-constructionist history. JJ lost his best recruiters in Klemm and Reinbold. Then he lost most of his best players when all the Bennett players graduated. Players never came to JJ (before or after the ASU mess) and that is what JJ thought would happen but it never did. #HammerDown
Re: Stallion Was RightNo, that's a good point. He did have a ground crew in those two. It's still never gotten out publicly, by the way, as to why Reinebold left. Interesting story.
