Do we really need to be questioning who Larry Brown and staff are recruiting? Did you watch this team last year? We are good and this staff knows what it is doing.

Okay, I've got to raise a minor nitpick. Let me preface it by saying I love Larry, the recruiting staff he has, and their ability to spot talent. And outside of about five people on here, we're all extremely ignorant when it comes to college hoops and recruiting. But I'm seeing, generally, a number of people say (paraphrasing) "hey, trust Larry. He's Larry. If Larry likes him, we like him."
I sorta recall a lot of us (myself included) saying the same thing when June got here. "Oh, if June likes him, we like him." "If June thinks BLM can win a conference title as a true freshman, than the heck with Justin Willis (paraphrasing again)." Remember when he withdrew Ralston Dews' scholarship and we all guffawed at the high school coach's backlash because "he's June Jones. He'll get way better players." Yeah, that didn't turn out so great for us (not that Dews should have been offered in the first place).
So what's the point of my whining? Don't trust Larry just because he's Larry. Educate yourselves and embrace third party sources. Don't love the Foster signing because Larry loves him. Love the Foster signing because the kid blew out an ACL, hasn't played the AAU circuit, and was described as "criminally underrated" by people that do this stuff for a living.
Okay, whoever wants the soap box next can have it.

Very well said. LB is not infallible. The best thing now in SMU athletics and for a very long time? Yes absolutely. But not perfect.

Hey, I think it is totally acceptable for people to trust Coach Brown and staff. Are they perfect, no, they are human. I get what you are saying...don't just take Coach Brown's word for it. I agree. I think what most people are thinking in this situation is that given the ACL injury to Foster, Coach Brown and staff still think he is a player they want. I trust Coach Brown, well, because he is Coach Brown and has earned my trust. I also consider the third party sites. Do I embrace all of the third party sites, no, but I consider them. I embrace Coach Brown. It is not one or the other. It is the totatality, which is what I think you are saying.

I do trust Larry because he knows the game and he knows the system that he likes to run. We may not attract a bunch of 5 star players each year because they have no interest in playing defense. Maybe it is another reason, I don't know. What I do know is that we are involved in recruiting highly regarded talent that other teams want. We swing and miss on the same guys that a lot of teams swing and miss on. That is part of doing business at this level.
Blind trust is not something I subscribe to in general but I do have faith that this staff knows what they are doing until they show me otherwise.

How do you know 5 star athletes don't like to play defense? Do you know any 5 star athletes or are you making a unfair generalization? Duke gets 5 star athletes and they play defense. Your remarks seems somewhat uninformed and asinine on that.

Wow, sharp tongue. How about this, the reason we don't get 5 star consideration, is b/c there are a tiny number of them. Of those, bluebloods get first dibs, handler politics plays second fiddle, and overseas is an increasingly good option. Of the 5 who may consider us a year, at tops, how many are we supposed to land w/no tradition and 7k seat stadium, in a good, but not elite conference.

I know they're just mix tapes, but they make for fun discussion. Watch Foster's back to back w/McDuffie. Who is a more fluid athlete?

I think a major difference is that larry and staff work their butts off on the recruiting trail. June was the polar opposite and true or not, I felt like he was just trying to sell us snake oil bc, well that's who he ended up with.

You cannot compare Larry Brown to June Jones.. it's night and day. LB has proven himself as a winner and one of the most knowledgeable people of basketball. JJ on the otherhand is lazy and never ever recruited, not even in Hawaii. I believe in LB and staff more than I do in third party sites. LB knows what type of system he wants and what type of players will fit in that system.

Sorry if you missed my point. I thought I was clear. What I said was maybe they don't have an interest or maybe it is another reason. Maybe our staff does not give in to everything a recruit wants? Maybe they do not want to fight for playing time against established guys on our roster? Jalen told Larry he wanted guaranteed time and Larry did not do that and Jalen left. That is the attitude that SOME kids have. I don't hang around a lot of 5 star players at my age so no, I don't know any of them. My opinion, which you do not need to agree with, is that we fill the pipeline with players that will be here for a few years and not worry as much about the 5 star guys that come to school for a semester and then leave for the pros. Sure, I would love to sprinkle those guys in the mix every now and then, but look at the team and the performance on the court to judge this staff instead of how many guys we are NOT signing. The point is to win games and that is happening.
