Godfather on Turner-administrationModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: Godfather on Turner-administration
Good to see you back. Miss seeing you at games this year.
Re: Godfather on Turner-administrationYes, there have been improvements made of late, but, kind of like the Bill Cosby situation, when you have so many claiming that there are still problems, there has to be some level of fire.....somewhere. I've even had nonrevenue SMU coaches, shake their heads in frustration, and say, we still have problems that other schools don't.
Re: Godfather on Turner-administration
Don't know why you would even think that. I happen to be there during the Pony Express days. The players I met were genuinely nice guys who were well-received by the student body, I'm sure in no part to their success of the field (much like the current BB team). Certainly no one thought of them as morons, that's crazy talk. I never said you received cash, although I did know players who contributed less than you did to the Pony Express success who were paid. I never said you were given grades to play, although I strongly suspect we did things (as other schools did and do today) to 'help along' marginal students. But to my bigger point ponyte, one that you are not responding to; 0-50-1, 0-40 & 0-21 By 3 criteria, 3 very fair and reasonable and illuminating criteria, we are 0-111-1 I'm not proud of that. I'm not OK with that. I see it leading to our ultimate death in FB and eventual return to irrelevancy in BB. This is not simply about MK, this has been going on for 25 years. MK represents our commitment to athletics. 0-111-1 PATHETIC
Re: Godfather on Turner-administrationTimes we have beaten a Big12 south school (TCU included only after they joined the Big12) post DP. ZERO TIMES 0-50-1
Times we have won a conference championship under RGT. ZERO TIMES 0-40 Times we have been ranked in the Top 65 (ie receive Tourney invite over past 21 years. ZERO TIMES 0-21
Re: Godfather on Turner-administrationIf I had to guess at what happened with Kennedy - he was able to transfer in, and his credits came in. But if he changed his major from History, they wouldn't allow certain classes to transfer and wouldn't be eligible.
So, now he is in a position of having to work towards a major that is much harder than it is at Nova, and he can't switch because he will fall behind in the progress towards a degree. I would guess that Larry would feel super guilty if MK isn't able to make it back, because he welcomed him in as a transfer and promised he would do what it takes to make him successful. I've heard about other guys on the team struggling academically, so I am sure there is a ton of effort keeping them eligible, which is probably pretty exhausting for Larry and the staff. We are going to have to figure out if we are an academic first school or an athletics first school.
Re: Godfather on Turner-administrationReally? We need to figure out if we're an athletics or academics school? What would make you think we're an athletics school other than the existence of the COC / David Miller?
Re: Godfather on Turner-administration
Sorry Jason, realize you are not a decision maker, but statements like this irk the crap out of me. There are some 40 schools, mostly P5, who are either somewhat on par with us academically or actually superior to us. How come THEY have figured this out and we haven't. More to the point, this is not an either or question. Athletic success actually enhances academics, especially in a sports crazy part of the world called Texas.
Re: Godfather on Turner-administration
Who are the non-P5 schools that are academically on par or superior to SMU that have figured it out? Peruna is my mascot!
Re: Godfather on Turner-administrationI don't know if they 'figured it out' but Rice has long out performed us

Re: Godfather on Turner-administrationif JasonB's theory is correct then under NCAA rules those "excess electives" that aren't part of his designated degree at SMU which he had to elect by his 3rd year couldn't count toward the academic progress toward degree. See my post above. I don't know Villanova's curriculum but its very likely that most of his freshman courses were not part of any designated degree but more like general liberal arts freshman curriculum. I think its very plausible. So was it SMU or the NCAA that really is to blame. All that nonsense about representations and "fraud" made by SMU when he came to SMU wouldn't matter under the 3rd year rule-NCAA rules would clearly override what he was told even if they actually were made

When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: Godfather on Turner-administrationVery interesting. Could have been doomed no matter what.
Re: Godfather on Turner-administration
In that case Villanova would probably hold most of the blame since they did what was needed to keep him eligible for 2-3 years knowing full well that beyond that it would be impossible to keep him eligible based on the classes he took.

I believe we can put both first at the same time. "We will play man to man and we will pick you up at the airport." - Larry Brown
