And the fact that it sounds like the players came up with the idea to do it because of LB's connection with Dean Smith. Much better than JJ forcing a half [deleted] attempt at wearing black jerseys on everybody because "recruits" want them. It didn't ever appear to help his DITR recruiting approach.

Never indicated you "do not know anything." I was suggesting the forrest for the trees argument. Using the black was simple since I believe we already had worn black uniforms (and thus a perfect JJ example of being lazy even when attempting to do something honorable). The idea was to honor the sacrifice of those individual players and the school they represent...a graduating class who has lost 3 members (including one member of that team) to KIA status. Other teams have done similar things when playing against teams that have recently suffered a tragedy, a bit different than this but similar in the sentiment. Amazingly, life is not black and white. Honestly, I think the honoring of West Point is much more valid and important that Dean Smith, but that is just me.

Charleston Pony wrote:I agree with all the comments that it was "not the same". My point was more along the lines of "it was a thoughtful thing for our coach and team to do". I thought the same thing about wearing black against Army even when others were so outraged. I had that same thought, i.e., some of these Army seniors might not be with us a year from now. I think JJ's heart was in the right place. It was his lack of work ethic and general attitude towards SMU (the little school that can't) that made most of us turn on him. My comment was just that when I saw the Carolina Blue Mustang logo, it made me think of the JJ bowl game tribute to Army and how very different our fans are going to react to Larry Brown and his team's gesture than how so many did to the black unis. Now, this might be a perfect Segway into about a 10 page discussion of uniforms...

Charleston, had the intent been sincere, I'm sure the JJ black uniform thing would have gone over better. But, we were told as fans that the black uniforms were to "honor the Armed Forces" - while black is really only a color for the West Point athletics teams. See thread linked below and read Arkpony's and Longtime's posts.

The truth was that JJ just wanted to wear black. If it were truly something to honor the Armed Forces, something different would have been done, such as uniform patches of the seals of each branch or for each of our players to wear a patch with the initials of a recently fallen soldier. Or even an Army Green jersey with Navy Blue pants, an Air Force lighting bolt on the helmet, and socks honoring the Coast
Guard and Marines. That would be tacky, but it would be honoring the armed forces more than the black did.

Had the school said that we would wear black to boost recruiting, many would have been OK with it. But instead, they insulted our intelligence by asking us to accept some story about honoring the armed forces.

Ego play for Coach Tiki? Yep.

Thoughtful salute to the heroes on the other sideline? Yeah, right.

I agree with Calallen, and no, puckhead, we had not worn black before. At least not in my many many years of following the ponies.

But this is old news and I would think not a proper time to be splitting argumentative hairs when we have a glorious day to celebrate Mustang basketball.

Exactly. I didn't think anybody still believed the black was really to honor Army.

Among my numerous criticisms with POCrap coach aka tiki, the black uniforms doesn't even register.

I was more ticked that day at the timing of the Maryland incident, the mismatch between jerseys and pants, and most importantly the uninspired play.
