Nothing is off limits in this context, except racial/gender stuff. When I say "nothing", I mean nothing regarding someone's BEHAVIOR. Completely open season. ESPECIALLY from students section ("hey, they're just crazy kids").

The Pitino stuff was a thing of absolute beauty. Do your research, find something good, and relentlessly go after it until the final whistle. Then, shake hands at the end. The most mentally strong wins.

Now, a little sexual innuendo and double entendre is fine, but I don't think marital status is, if that was in fact the intent of the chant and not just a coincidence. You don't have to be crude or cheap to be loud, ethusiastic and biting. I don't want to hear one person who is endorsing "anything goes" ever call another student section or fan base classless. I don't understand why we would encourage disrespecting the wishes of the man responsible for our current success by disrepsecting his friends and colleagues, or by disregarding his requests to be loud without being crass.

The claim that Duke students do it is simply not true. Duke students WERE notorious for over the line, vulgar, anything goes chants, but have not been since the mid-80s, when they were exhorted by Terry Sanford to be "clever but clean," "devastating but decent," "witty and forceful but G-rated for television," and have been reminded by their coach before the season each year. The worst I've heard Duke students do in the last 20 years (granted I haven't heard every one of them) was when there was a Vandy player whose last name was Bates, and we (I was there) chanted on opposite sides "Master -- Bates." Then when he missed a free throw, we chanted "too much wrist." Most of the time these days though, you hear standard defense cheers, Duke players' names, "Let's Go Duke" and "Our House." You don't hear the Duke crowd chanting [deleted] after crappy calls because they respect the wishes of their coach. You don't like the alternatives they've come up with (e.g. "We Beg to Differ", "I'm Blind. I'm Deaf. I wanna be a ref"), fine, then think of some other clever alternative. It's their proximity, volume and total commitment to unison that makes them effective, not chanting "down my leg" or the like at coaches.

He's an assassin that's about to get us throttled for recruiting a kid we all knew he shouldn't have touched. He had no job options and its turned out great on the court. All due respect to DiamondM, the only loud thing in Moody for many years, and without comment on the specific divorce comment, how Duke does it is not objectively right, wrong, or better than anyone else, and we must find our own SMU way

Agreed that SMU should find its own way. I suggested that way be ascerbic, creative wit that doesn't involve wives, mothers, sisters, etc., but clearly no one follows my lead anyway, or I wouldn't have been the only person yelling in Moody for the last 15 years. So feel free to emulate Maryland fans, where the only thing they hurl at opposing teams, coaches, and fans besides something that rhymes with "Duck Fook" (or Ducking Fook player's sister) are batteries and water bottles. (well, not anymore -- I guess they'll have to Ruck Futgers now.)

But please delete all past and future "stay classy" threads in this forum if we choose to go that way. I never want to hear any more complaints about Texas Tech fans, Houston fans, Tulsa fans, or anyone else. Mmmkay.

It's interesting that acting without class is OK in a sporting arena, but somehow, many of these same people wouldn't act that way elsewhere.
