When this fails, which conference will Coog High threaten next?

Yeah except we had the governor and lt governor along with a lot of the money behind them. They currently have...

Give me SMU (and the BU/SMU/TCU rivalry triangle) over UH any day.

i get boosterism, but you can't flat out lie and get away with it. UH is not tier one at anything remotely associated with academics.

It's a trick of the us news and world report. They rank the top 200 schools and give them all "tier one" status, so #189 University of Houston calls themselves tier I the same as #19 Rice.
The Big XII sucks academically compared to the other P5 conferences, so I'm not sure they care but UH academic ranking certainly isn't a positive. Currently #168 WVU is the lowest ranked P5 team, so that would move to mythical Big XII UH too.
#19 Rice
#53 Texas
#58 SMU
#68 Texas A&M
#71 Baylor
#76 TCU
#106 (tie) Kansas
#106 (tie) Oklahoma
#106 (tie) Iowa State
#142 Kansas State
#145 Oklahoma State
#156 Texas Tech
#168 West Virginia
#189 Houston

If I am on the board of UH - I make this play. If, and I am more than willing to concede this is a big if, I can economically force UT into backing my school then I make the play. It all depends on how strong of a coalition I can put together. At the end of the day, if I can say that UT has to share all revenue (and I mean all) with every public school in Texas. Allowing UH into the Big XII is the lesser of two evils for the UT President.
Don't forget, politics is how Baylor got into the Big XII to begin with.

You make this play behind closed doors, not in the papers. Bring power players in and state your case. Lobby.
Taking it to the papers is desperate-looking and wreaks of not having political capital

let's watch how this is played out. If this is met with the "stomach game" (Japanese response of ignoring call for surrender), then another strategy is called for...but if it works, "Lenny, you will have saved the lives of millions of voters"...no no no, then there is hope for SMU.
Don't know where this stream of middle 70's-80's consciousness came from this morning. Cal, I think you are right, it smells of desperateness, but there ARE enough haters of all things Longhorn that it may resonate.

Hey, I have degrees from both SMU and UH!
There was a time when UH had a disproportionate amount of political clout. For example, UH successfully threw enough wrenches into A&M' attempted acquisition of South Texas College of Law on the 00's that A&M gave up and pursued Texas Wesleyan Law instead. Lots of UH law grads in govt., legislature and judiciary.
I don't know if that power still exists, though.
This is the kind of statement fans make and fans wish their school's leadership would make. In other words, there isn't any teeth behind it.

As much as I bash UH, I do it as a joke.
I know several lawyers, a couple judges, and several engineers that graduated from there (graduate school, not undergrad). Super smart folks and doubt going there degraded their ability to excel.

Wow. 33 spots behind tortilla throwers and 21 behind couch burners. That's impressive.

Any grad school means it's an above average person. It's the "any old undergrad'll do" people we are bashing.

The problem is that most haters of all things Longhorn are Aggies, Red Raiders, Bears, and Frogs, and don't care about UH (or SMU for that matter)
