Rhonda: athlete entitlement factor in retirement

Postby Mustangsabu » Sun Feb 28, 2016 2:06 pm

Rhonda has always had my respect. I think her view of college sports and mine are more aligned than many. Entitlement is a problem. I youth and college sports it's ridiculous. These are games. Pastimes. Entertainment. It's a sad reflection on society

team goes 0-13 on three pointers and shoots 27% overall in losing to a bad Houston team. Did Rhonda's comments (whether she attempted to clarify or not) have a negative effect on her team? Tough last game at Moody

I can guarantee you no coach likes adding the entitlements into the recruiting factors. With uneven amounts it becomes another impediment in competing with many schools. She is tired of it and said so. Wow, someone spoke their mind, let's kick her around on a chat site.

I for one liked Rhonda as our coach. I completely respect the job she did and she did it for longer than anyone else at this school has. Should she have been replaced earlier? I am not the one who was in position to decide that. I do not have the tools available to even make that an opinion. But several ADs did and they kept her.

I will miss her and I will welcome the new coach and hope she or he is able to make great strides forward with the program.

I appreciated her comments. In my opinion, it's past time for some people to start speaking out about these issues. Particularly in light of the fact that there are a lot of people who would like to see college athletics turn into a de facto professional minor league.

Not as much investment in womens or girls hoops. Quality of coaching is lower at high school level and you don't see many high school girls hitting the playground courts. Safety factor or lack of courts? Focus on soccer and track? There are as many availablr athletes to go to college but something allows the huge disparity. Is it just allocation of resources?

Rhonda obviously does not have a Larry Brown coaching record, but then there are not too many coaches that do. However, Rompola in her 25 years as head coach of the Mustangs has an overall record of 438-314. During her tenure as head coach, she has led the Mustangs to the postseason 13 times, including seven NCAA Tournament berths (1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2008), and captured five conference championships (1999, 2000, 2008, 2009 and 2013). She has also guided her teams to 20 wins in a season nine times, including a program-record 24 wins in 2007-08.

Not all that shabby a record.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
