agreed. the way some of the posters on here post about our "academic prestige" you'd think we're an Ivy league school. Hell, UCONN is ranked higher than us
It's the only school ranked above SMU in the American. Welcome back Lebanese.
Tulane.

There are what, 17 schools in this beauty pageant + 10 existing schools in B12. UT is the indisputable crown jewel of this conference. SMU more closely resembles UT than any of the other 26 schools. To say that we are 'just another guy' is an insult to SMU and surprising coming from as big a supporter as you. Didn't read all this thread but one would hope that part of our sales pitch is that we would complete our Athletic improvements funding within 90 days of acceptance.
Honest question - how is it we are the ones who most resemble UT? One of the largest colleges in the country and the flagship school for the state of Texas vs. a smallish Methodist University with a checkered football past. Whatever the other schools might look like, I don't think we resemble them very much. And I have to agree with JasonB - we have not done enough to distinguish ourselves from the pack, especially the past two years. You're right about the 90 days though - I'd put that in there as well.
Leopold, I think Puckhead did a great job of answering this question. I would only add from a personal level I could have attended any of these 27 schools. I applied for only 2, UT & SMU, the 2 Best B-schools in Texas. I wouldn't even consider 23 of these schools.

He didn't. I get the whole 'look underneath the current success' thing, but how does that make us the most similar to UT? Not just being a jerk - I asked my former Longhorn athlete wife the question and she honestly doesn't get it, either.

That's funny...I didn't mention UT once. I was responding to the general lunacy on this board. The level of short sighed idiocy is impressive...but doesn't solve anything.

Houston is a cinch to join the Big 12, especially after beating OU today. Cincy is probably a strong candidate too. The odds are that only two schools will join the Big 12 at this time. The BIg 12 is concerned about RPI of their games in order to make the final four NCAA playoffs. It also matters how big is the fan base and attendance at home games. This is the weakest area of qualifications for SMU's candidacy. If we are still in consideration, it is because of our big backers and their being shown some respect before other schools are chosen for Big 12 membership. Sorry to be discouraging about SMU's membership prospects , as much as I would love for it to happen, that is not realistic now.

The most discouraging thing is the appearance of Rice in that ESPN article. If they made this cut, it just shows that former SWC schools get a courtesy/pity inclusion in this round.

Pretty much all the big 12 ADs want to keep the conference at ten teams. The university presidents are the ones pushing to expand. If they add schools, the GOR will immediately have to be renegotiated and UT and OU do not want that to happen. Once the current GOR expires, UT and OU can go anywhere they want to go and they don't want to lose that option. Chances of expansion slim to none.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

I think, if it happens, the other spot goes to Memphis. After they obliterate Kansas.

That should do it right. Amazed other schools have not gotten it done this way.
