Next Year's Rotation

Bump this thread as we start talking about Jank's retiring and what happens to next year's roster.

Assuming all the young guys return, we have Phelps, Smith, Todorovic, Lundblade, McBride, Agunanne & Young along with Cisse and Anamekwe. The question is whether any of the 5 year seniors might return or whether we see significant roster turnover?

If Jank is out of coaching, does K.D. come back? Does Bandoumel? I thought I had read that Nutall was definitely coming back and I hope that's the case. He's an experienced guy who showed to be a pretty good defender and rebounder and hopefully just had an off year offensively. Coming in, Nutall had always been the alpha and suddenly he's part of a roster full of alphas and I really think that affected his shooting.

We can only hope a new coaching staff can land some talented bigs through the portal as this year's team really struggled against teams with talented bigs.

In today's game, it wouldn't be surprising to see many of those returning players enter the portal, if only you explore options. Hopefully not Cisse and Anamekwe -- god I hope Bandoumel and KD come back

Speculating on next year's roster now is barely even guesswork. Disaster will turn over a lot.

just look at the number of last year's smu players that could have but didn't return. the transfer portal is just gaining steam. factor NIL into this, and a new coach will have an uphill climb recruiting his own (last years) roster while shopping for new.

it will be much the same at a lot of schools.

smu bball could look like an expansion franchise next year. or the bright side: recruit well and gain ground faster than previously possible.

if we get a new coach who really can recruit, gain ground even faster.

looking for reasons to cheer, but expecting turnover.

I see no reason why, given the NIL landscape, the new coach can’t recruit in more talent than goes out. We ain’t short on financial resources.

You're exactly right. Heard some ex-coach on the radio the other day (can't remember who) saying the day is coming SOON when college basketball rosters will be made up of 3 groups of players:

1) spare parts who are just glad to be on a roster
2) 1-and-done guys who play and then jump to the pros
3) guys who play a season with an eye on options at other schools, planning to transfer immediately

The guy suggested that the game is on its way to teams made up almost entirely of 1-year rental players.

If that's the case, it's going to be even more critical to have a coach who is able to meld that kind of roster into a cohesive unit quickly. As quickly as coaches come and go in today's world, we could see much shorter leashes and more turnover than already exists.

If what he said ends up being true, we might be looking at an era of teams (apart from the perennial heavyweights like Gonzaga, Kentucky, etc.) that go on massive roller-coaster rides. Great one year, then horrible the next, because of crazy roster turnover.
