By the way, I will repeat. Check out how many kids from the state of North Carolina play for Duke. 1 kid on this year's roster........Would it be nice to get local kids???? Sure, but it isn't necessary. We need kids who can play and meet the entrance requirements and that means casting a wide net........
DISD coaches may badmouth SMU, but I have a hard time believing the kids will keep this grudge when Doh goes to them and gives them the "that was Copeland" routine and stares at them with his I-am-a-badass-play-for-me eyebrows. Most of them never even knew Tubbs.
what a shame that we have to accept being persona non grata in our own backyard, which happens to be one of the best hotbeds for hoops around. It is of course true that there are plenty of players everywhere, but the fact is that SMU is in Dallas. Our only chance to attract real blue chips is local kids who for various personal reasons want to play close to home. We are never going to get a top 75 player from anywhere outside of North Texas these days. We dont play in a good enough league and television is too important. We need to have access to ALL of the Dallas schools, not just half of them. We need to get a few local blue chips and then supplement them with the best talent we can get from around the country like Morris and Bamba Fall. That is a strategy. Giving the finger to the hotbed in your backyard is not.
I was wondering where all of the "screw the DISD we don't need them" posters had gone. I see that your are back, but if you believe what our new coach said yesterday, they are important to him.

Hey Mr. Arrogant: What "part of the country" are you talking about? Within 300 miles of Dallas? (In which case what "successful" programs are you talking about--UT, ATM?) If not, look at LSU, OU, Kansas, Wichita St., Memphis, NM, UTEP. Geez. Stop being such an a-hole. Geaux MUSTANGS! Geaux Tigers!
I don't think anyone is suggesting giving the finger to anyone. Relationships are important anywhere and everywhere and SMU will begin rebuilding its relationship with DISD. I think the point he is making is that just bc we might fall on hard times with DISD in the short term does NOT mean that all is lost. We can still get some good recruits from other areas until we start winning and DISD starts to warm up to us again.
don't you understand, the finger has already been given and received. Whether we meant to do it is irrelevant really. We hid behind the ncaa and some bullcrap double talk. We fired one of their own and no one really understands the real reasons why. That constitutes the proverbial finger my friend.

Oh, yeah, the brother act from a DISD school worked real well for us before.
We'll be fine.
what a stupid comment.
All I was saying was we shouldn't get all excited because some kid has a brother that might come to SMU. The possibility is NOT worth basing our choice of a coach on.
Coach Doherty has had great success as a recruiter before, and there's no reason he can't again. Sure, a little time might be necessary with some of the local coaches, but having a great salesman sitting down with them and hashing out differences might speed up the healing process.
No Rosebud. You are wrong. DISD players only want to play for coaches with DISD ties- period. We are doomed. Any intelligent person can see that. Your ignorance infuriates me. Tubbs is gone and there will never be another DISD recruit again.
You know what, some kids might actually think that a quick trigger on a coach whose team was not performing well and was caught up in some albeit minor violations actually shows a committment to putting together a winning program. I would not worry so much about the threats or promises of DISD coaches. As many (including the DISD coaches) said, the ultimate decision lies with the kids themselves.
I think they're hacked off because they realize they weren't able to make SMU do what they wanted anymore. If Coach Doherty goes out and gets a good player from North Carolina or Kansas or New York, I'll cheer for them just as much as I would if they sign a team full of guys from Dallas. I'm not a fan of people who grew up in Dallas - I'm a fan of SMU.
I am so sick of the DISD talk. Yes we want local kids to come to games, get interested and sign. Play close to home for a great program. Dallas IS a fertile recruiting ground, and we should be able to tap that resource. DA's and Bosh's, no we will probably never get unless we improve as a program.
HOWEVER, Doherty does have the most important recruiting inroads...AAU teams and coaches. This is who he will recruit from, and in my opinion, who he will have the most success with. And he can do that ANYWHERE in the country!!!!!
ncpony - AGREED! It's not like the DISD coaches are steering what schools these kids play for; it's all about the AAU coaches (see Arthur and Jazzy Hartwell).
"Then in the Arctic half-light of the canyon, all existence fades to a being with my soul and memories and the sounds of the Big Blackfoot River and a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise."
I assume everyone knows that new SMU Assistant Coach James Stafford is a former AAU coach.
