I could be "mis-remembering" because I also remember attending NCAA Tournament games that may have been played in the Dean Dome in the late 80's while living in Durham. SMU beat David Rivers' Notre Dame team in the 1st round before losing to Duke who may have gone on to win the National Championship that year with Laettner, Hurley & company. SMU section had good seats for those games
Partially correct. The Kato Armstrong-led, seventh-seeded Mustangs did beat 10-seed Notre Dame on St. Patrick’s Day in the first round in 1988 in the Dean Dome, which had been open for a few years, and lost to 2-seed Duke two days later. But that Duke team lost in the national semis; Kansas and Zero U played an all-Big-8 final. That was the start of five straight Final Fours for the Devils, though; the first two natties were the last two of those, in 1991 and 1992. Laettner arrived at Duke the year after those Dean Done games; Hurley one year after that.
