Cutting our losses with TubbsModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower
If MW gave money for an improper purpose and knew that the money was going for an improper purpose, then he deserves punishment. If MW thought the money was going towards a proper purpose, then he gets off scott free.
thats a joke of a punishment. Besides you mean no contact with anyone besides his grandson right? That way he can still monitor Doherty's coaching.
To be fair, Bennett's coaches ride their players' asses about grades. The impression I have is Tubbs' left it up to the A-LEC staff, which was a terrible, terrible mistake.
Max is at worst a bad guy and at best a moron. Whether he gets banned is really inconsequential because he has already suffered a worse fate. He has become: pick any and all that you like - a pariah, a joke, a non-entity, a scumbag, someone that even if he gives big money is never going to "feel the love" from his beloved university, a sad pathetic man (nod to jt).........
Well, two points. First, the support is there, said support I am told is just incompetent support, which is really no support at all. It is like a lot of things at SMU-the resources are there, they are just applied terribly and very few notice and very few seem to care. Second, Bennett learned that lesson. I have a hard time believing he didn't clue Tubbs in. And even if he didn't, losing Hopkins for the fall should have served as a wakeup call.
we agree on that, but SMU should hold him to the same standard as tubbs, whatever that is. Banning may be appropriate. I honestly don't know if SMU can ban him, but I do know that Matt ought to pack his bags and move on. Thats the only thing to do. Just like you guys said about Tubbs, maybe life aint fair and neither is college athletics. See ya Matt. See ya Max.
If he thought he was giving money for a proper purpose, why did he tell the DMN he gave money to Tubbs and it was a violation by Tubbs? I mean, money is fungible, so one man's violation with money is another's. If he thought he was giving money for a propoer purpose, why bring it up at all?
Hoop, do you take responsibility for anything? Or are you one of these people who push blame on anyone and everyone possible? Tubbs was the head basketball coach. His life was SMU basketball. He has to be responsible for things. Don't just say "once again, way to go SMU. Not enough support in place to be big time and then fire the coach over it." Yes, I would like for us to have great tutors and great academic support for the players but the coaching staff needs to be up to date on these matters and yes it falls on the feet of the head coach.
Matt will have to earn his spot on the team. Doherty won't give the kid a free pass just because. Yes life isn't fair, but I don't envision scholarships getting pulled to make 2 ponyfan posters happy (which you wouldn't be. you would still [deleted].)
Well that's not hard to do these days. My mind is easily frazzled, which probably explains a lot to everyone out there. Okay, if you do something that you and the coach think is legit at the time, and later you discover it was a violation, do you (1) turn the coach in for the violation that you helped create and get him fired; (2) keep your mouth shut and stop doing it; or (3) I can't think of anything else, whatever. It seems to me that (1) is the wrong choice if you truly have no agenda. Clearer?
As I posted earlier, I don't think Doherty is going to give Matt W a free ride. Matt is going to have to earn his scholarship and I don't think Max is going to be able to run interference for his grandson. Matt for maybe the first time in his life is going to have to earn something on his own. We'll see if he is up to it or if he will quietly slip away claiming the ankle never healed properly. I for one hope he steps up and proves he can play at this level. God knows we need a 3pt shooter............
