Overcoming the 0.501 Mentality

Postby Mustang1991 » Wed Sep 13, 2006 9:54 pm

One of the problems that I see in a lot of the suggestions for a new coach (in the event there should be an opening) is the "aim middle" mentality - the suggestion that we should be happy if we get a coach who will just break 0.500. I guess the thought process is that once we get back to 0.500 then we can dump that coach and get a really good one to take us to the next level. Hand the coach who returned us to respectability a nice check and shake his hand as he is ushered out the door.

Why not aim high in the beginning? Why not make a run at a high-profile, successful coach? We need someone who can make a splash on the football scene -- a mix of attention-getter, go-getter and proven winner. When you bring in such a coach you send a message to the team, coaching staff and fans that the university has lofty goals. And by "lofty" I mean double-digit wins, not 0.501.

Until we start demanding more, we will keep getting served what we think is enough to satisfy us.

With SMU's record of supporting the program circa the last 17 years (Cite: Stallion), we have about as much chance of making that kind of decision as...well, a spontaneous hailstorm over the Galleria.

Ah hell, give JJ a try. What is the worst thing that could happen?

I think we should go after Mack Brown or Pete Carroll. Also, if Bobby Bowden or Steve Suppier are open minded, someone should approach them as well....somebody suggested Bill Parcells, I say go for it, or maybe even the guy at New England, Belichech....is Darrell Royal still alive??
