He recruited Justin Rogers, Blake Warren, Cedric Dorsey, Adrain Haywood for starters. You obviously don't know Jerry Bennett. He brings a lot to the table.

I didn't claim to know his background, now I know. That's great, I retract my comments about Jerry Bennett.

That would be East Texas legend, as in Marshall.

The man can recruit.

I mentioned a couple of days ago, that somebody is going to have to pay for this season's inconsistency.

If Phil stays -- which is my hopes -- I think you are looking at some wholesale offensive staff changes.
That includes:
OC Rusty Burns (keep a good thought because his father is quite ill)
RB coach Clarence James = That position lacked consistency
OL coach Ronnie Vinklarek = If you can't get one yard, see Rice, Houston, Marshall

Add a special teams coach, even though they improved throughout the year.

And again, Phil needs to trust his coaches, let them do their job and not settling on people he deems inferior. You want coaches to grow and be dynamic.

I am so undecided on anything, I really have a hard time commenting, but how do you let a guy hire his third offensive staff?

I know what you're saying. But my thinking that if Bennett stays, somebody is going. Tennessee has gone through this with three different staffs under Fulmer. Minnesota has co-offensive coordinators. That's just food for thought.

If he didn't, there were some serious problems with our hiring process while Copeland was here. Are you saying Bennett never wanted Burns and he was forced on him by Copeland? I find that really hard to believe, even for SMU, but crazier things have happened.

Head coaches are responsible for wins and losses and Bennett might take the fall this season for not producing more W's. Since that burden falls on the head coach, he rightfully gets to bring in his staff. I would be shocked to know that Bennett was not the one to ultimately make the call on Burns, but its very likely you know something I do not.

After a winless 2003 season, Copeland told Bennett there needed to be staff changes. Bennett is loyal to his staff to a fault and I am sure he would have been happy to keep Larry Edmonson and his 117th ranked offense out of 117 teams. However, to extrapolate from that that Bennett had no say in who his offensive coordinator was is ridiculous.

It's all hear say. I was just given the impression from several folks that Rusty's hire was strongly encouraged by Copeland. If you think about it, a defensive minded coach like Phil probably has his reservations about bringing in an offense that by it's very nature leaves his defense on the field longer and more vulnerable. Especially since he hadn't recruited the skill positions for that offence to that point...
