Do you think for one minute this will attract the students? Do you think this will increase the crowd for the game? And then require game attendance to see the concert? OK so I show up with 5 mins left in the 4th, so I can see a free concert, that is if I am a C/W fan, which I am not. What if I want to leave before the concert? Are you going to block the exists?

This is probably the stupidist idea I have seen on this board in a long, long time.
DiamondM75: I think you meant 'absurd', not obsured...right? And since you're not a C&W fan, you don't fit the profile of the target audience for this marketing idea...but I'll expound a little further for you....

The 'idea' is to get a crowd into Ford that might not necessarily attend an SMU game. A little 'cross-promotion' on the local C&W radio stations (which have some of the highest ratings in the D-FW market) as well as on the sports radio stations could bring in a sizeable crowd. More than the paltry 15K that usually shows up, at least. I'd estimate a promotion like this could pull in about 25-28K. The 'idea' is to get more folks into the game, not just students. And, yes...if you want to see the concert you have to attend the game, at least by half-time.

If you want to leave BEFORE the concert, knock your socks off. No...we wouldn't block the exits...the UP Fire Marshal would frown on that. ;)

Bottom line: someone in the SMU Mktg. Dept. needs to call Jack Ingram to find out if he'd even be willing to do this. (The worst thing he could say would be 'no'.) Sure, he has expenses to pay. Don't we all? But the saying goes: if you want to make money, you have to spend a little money. In the long run, the concert could be used as a springboard to sell tickets to more SMU games next season.

I'd suggest that the Mustangs schedule the Jack Ingram concert (if he agrees to it) after the first home game next season which is against Sam Houston State. A guaranteed win, right? They're a lowly Div. II school. And we all know that they're a bunch of dumb hicks down there anyway...sell their fans tickets to the game too with the 'added bonus' of a free concert afterwards and they'll stick around. And since the Mustangs will STOMP all over the Bearcats, it's a guaranteed 'W' for us to build on for selling more tickets to get more people to the remaining home games.

Thoughts?

yeah, for his normal appearence fee. probably somewhere in the $10,000-$15,000 range. there's a lot of support that goes into putting on a show from management to crew. at our attendance rates, that would be a dollar out of every ticket.

Great idea in "theory", but Jack is not in the charity business, and has bill to pay, more mouths to feed than just his own. and he certainly doesn't OWE it to SMU.

have you asked him personally? i didn't think so...

One other thing that the SMU Marketing Department could do to promote this game/concert would be to give away a new Mustang convertible. Red or blue are the colors, of course.

Contest slips are left at the entrance gates to Ford Stadium and are collected at the end of half-time.

Get one of the local Ford dealerships to sponsor it (hey, Troy Aikman...are you out there?) and then hold the drawing at the END of the Jack Ingram concert. Of course, you have to be PRESENT to win! ;) And have Jack draw the lucky fan's name.

John David Blagg and his band, Pilotdrift, are gaining popularity and Kelan Luker and his band, Submersed, are um, a band. They get play on Sirius.

I saw Jack Ingram open for Willie in NYC around '97 or so. Great band. I wasn't too taken with him, but then again I didn't know he was a Mustang at the time. Had I known that, it would have changed the color of my glasses. If y'all say he's cool, then I'll take your word for it. In any event, if a man opens for Willie Nelson, how bad can he be.

Hey Jack Ingram is on a roll-now he has a second top selling single called "Love You" (he said sarcastically). This one may do well on both the country and pop charts. I noticed he also has a song called the "Mustang Burn". Hmm

I, along with another Mustang Club member, have tried for the last two years to put together a concert either before, during, or after a home game. Their response: sounds like a good idea...but...............No.

Here is there logic:
They don't see any financial benefit to the athletic department. It is a drain on thier current budget and they really don't have the money.
Our rebuttal: Lets us raise the money ourselves. We will solicit donations, sponsorships, and whatever else we need to make it happen.
Their response: We don't want you to go to the same well. We want to make sure that when we really want something, we (SMU Mustang Club) feel comfortable asking them for more money.

SMU would rather use the funds raised to go to the MC general fund. They don't think this will put butts in the seats and frankly, neither do I. I don't have any confidence in the student body to stay for a concert. The moment the game goes bad, the students will leave. At that point we are easily down $15k - $20k and have an empty stadium on our hands.

I unfortunatley don't know how else to approach the MC. The current big boosters like the current events that are planned on an annual basis. They are not much for change. Don't forget, the MC is their to raise money, not spend it.

Jack Ingram played my freshman year for homecoming. Jacko Pierce also played. He's been in a couple of big bands like Vertical Horizon. Both guys went to SMU. It was the Pair o' Jacks concert and probably one of the biggest Homecoming concerts I've ever been to. The closed off half of Moody and the other half was filled. I actually was about half-way up in the upper sections.

It would be cool to try and get both guys back for a post-game concert. That way you cover C&W and Rock/Alternative/Pop genres.

Uh, you mean all three guys? Jack Ingram, Jack O'Neill and Cary Pierce?
