Harvard's crimson IS almost maroon. Technically, it's the same shade as Alabama's crimson, but it looks a little different on Harvard for some reason. As much as Harvard and Yale's colors are something to aspire to in spirit, in reality I don't think the combination of a dark blue and a true crimson would be pleasing to the eye.

It sounds to me like we're going back to the royal blue and bright red of the 1980s. I say "sounds" because what "looks" like one color on a computer screen looks like another shade in reality. Colors especially differ from computer screen to computer screen.

I'm sort of on-the-fence on this. While my era at SMU was the royal blue-and-red 80s, it's kind of cool sometimes to see the darker navy that the blue was intended to be. It has more off an old-school, traditional look than royal blue. A darker red would be OK, but I abhor anything close to maroon. I like that Sweet isn't taking a hard line on this.

I bet we still have a lot of dark blue (navy) products because that's simply an attractive base color - it's what people wear in polos, T-shirts, ballcaps - and it's close enough to what are now the official colors. In fact, I don't see any problem with SMU marketing a line of products in "classic" colors (i.e. navy and crimson) in addition to items in the official colors. Some schools have two mascots, two nicknames, etc. Why can't SMU have two shades of official colors?

The color samples posted here and on the AD blog don't look right on my computer screen - the red has sort of a pinkish tone and the blue looks a little too pastel. I found examples of pms 186 and pms 286, from another university's site, that I'm guessing will more closely match what you'll be seeing on SMU's uniforms:

I have noticed that when listing these colors they are preceded with the letters PMS. Thus I think we have solved the issue as to why we can not get a solid, settled answer to the color problem. Having had to deal with PMS issues most of my adult life throughout my marriages, I can assure you that color decision is just one issue in thousands on which thoughts and opinions change dramatically and constantly on a daily basis a certain times.

Except men seem to be the ones making the color decision and, as we all know, most men are color blind. :D

Longtime, you have no idea how much better I feel now knowing our evolved "official" school colors are the exact same as Georgia State (Who?) University. Gawd...give me a break. 186 red and 286 blue have no character...they are bland, bland, bland colors.

"Looks good to me on the PonyFans.com masthead and on my avatar."

PK, I may be way off base, but the red on the masthead and in your avatar is what I would call scarlet, not crimson. Maybe it's a "deep scarlet" or "cardinal" as some fashionista would say, but it doesn't look like crimson, i.e. what Harvard, Alabama and OU wear.

Or maybe Harvard, Alabama and OU have got it all wrong. Their version of crimson is close to maroon. In the right light, it's sometimes mistaken for maroon.

However, there is no light that can make maroon look good. Sorry, Aggies.

I guess there are varying opinions on what is crimson, but they all look pretty much the same to me and pretty much the same as PonyFans.com "red" and my avatar.

Actually there are differences. Alabama's official color is PMS 201, which does not look like their practice jersey above. Google "PMS color charts" to see the various PMS colors.

from the harvard pix, those unis (khaki pants in those days) & helmet (with the exception of the stripes, etc.) were the same as our 30's, 40's, & early 50's unis.

hmmmmmmmm, interesting / nice color scheme :!:
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

There is no point in arguing about color except in person since monitor/tv settings can greatly affect color.
