That we can agree on. Applewhite, like Gill is also an unknown.
Still can not agree since I do not classify Gill as unknown, just not big time. And not BCS which is so far a listed criteria so that probably eliminates him. I just think if chosen he could bring some new life and strong recruiting to the school.
As far as people meeting the criteria, I like Barnett, Mason, Fran, and Bowden, who ever can get here the quickest.
I was agreeing to your reference that it makes no sense to discredit Gill's merits by classifying him as an unknown while supporting Applewhite to be the head coach.
Applewhite is an intriguing candidate because he is so young.
He has proven that he can coordinate an offense at two schools, attaining remarkable success at Rice, and increasing the point production at Alabama, including a near victory if not for a turnover against that heralded defense of LSU.
Now, he is intriguing because he is also an unknown quantity - because we do not know how good of a head coach he might be.
However, no one on this board can honestly say that he would not have an IMMEDIATE and INCREDIBLE recruiting effect for SMU. Hell, I bet he could outrecruit at least a few candidates that were considering TEXAS -
"Hey man, I was the #1 guy over there and the very next year Mack comes in and f's me....maybe he won't do that to you, but I had the B12 freshman of the year award, and was B12 player of the year...etc.etc...but you go ahead and go to Texas..."
All that would be left to determine is who could he fill out his staff with...and since he is not the d-minded coach, he could find an up and coming Dcoordinator, or an established former HC that has assumed his rightful role as a DCoordinator (and never will be a HC again).
Boise State seems to be doing pretty good last year and this with the worlds youngest offensive and defensive coordinators. Not to mention, the HC was the former OC as well for all of a few years.

Yes, exactly the position we want to be in after the last 20 years.[/quote]
But you would prefer two downtrodden old coaches with recruiting violations hanging over them to Applewhite?
Rice
Pre-apple: 0-12
Apple year: 7-5
Post-apple: 2-8
Alabama:
Pre-apple: points per game= 22.9; 335 yards per game
Apple year: points per game= 31.8; 395 yards per game

And TURNER GILL is NOT going to come to Dallas if he can get the NEB job...though if he is that good, why don't they offer it to him? IF not, we should not want him anyway.

I would prefer a proven winner at the D-1 level, preferably in a strong conference, over Applewhite any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Recruiting violations are imposed against a school, not a coach.

Whatever dude. Just give the reigns to the most successful football program of the past 10 years to a bunch of 28 year olds...right.
What are you talking about?
