Yeah, those last few weeks were tough. The early part of that year was promising. The S. hit the fan right after the ND game. (The Hansen thing) As I recall, we then beat T. Tech and then that miserable final game at Texas Stadium against Arkansas (wasn't it 49-0?)
Interesting remembrance (or at least I thought so): I was at a sportscaster convention in Dallas that previous August of 86 (was a sportscaster in Greenville and Tyler in a different life) Anyway, they had a roundtable forum on college athletics and the press etc.) Bob Hitch our former AD was one of the speakers. They talked about the role of the press and the SWC's outlaw image. Anyway, Hitch says something to the effect of "I am almost afraid to turn the tv on or read the newspaper. I think we all have things in our program we worry about."
Deloss Dodd, who was also on the program concurred.
Who knew what would happen later?
You must've run in the same circles as Bill Coats then, right? UT grad who did SMU games when they were televised locally in the 80s and now sports guy at KTBB in Tyler...or at least he was through a couple years ago on the morning show. Hell maybe you are Bill Coats
No I'm not Bill Coats (LOL), but I am familiar with him. I think he was in Tyler after my years there. Solid broadcaster as I recall.
I also interviewed Bobby Collins when I went to an SMU alumni event in Tyler that previous June. I remember Coach Collins saying that he was tired of the SWC being called, "the dirtiest conference." He hadn't heard anything yet.
