There were hardly any fans that came to see these local guys. It was about the same as it ever was back then. Maybe the player's families, that is about it.
The reason I posted this is because it just [deleted] away that they already have that many quality commitments. I'll admit, I am jealous. Some of their commits have recently be swayed away from their previous TCU commitments. That is amazing to me. NT doesn't have ballsweat on SMU or TCU as a school, and it stings very badly to see them doing better than us in athletics. Having said this, a big hire by us can change the recruiting tide in a snap.
Loco, that is why many on this board including myself would not be unhappy with a TDodge hire. Way prefer TD over Coker.
Doh is a phenomenal coach and a great recruiter. He had to lift our program out of the toilet, so that's not going to happen after a year.
And for the record, go look at North Carolina's roster and see how many of those kids are from the Research Triangle (Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Durham), or even North Carolina for that matter. Saying that a basketball program has to have local kids to drum up interest or be successful is ludicrous. Do we have a great local talent pool that we need to tap in to? Absolutely. Continued success in recruiting and on the court is what is going to make the roof explode off Moody. Success breeds success, as they say. The roster is upside down now with lower classmen which is an uphill battle Doh and the Ponies will have all season long, and considering he was coach of the year at one time, I think he's got the skills to have a good record to build on come the end of the season.
The local talent thing has been argued here for a long time.
My opinion is SMU needs to keep some of the local talent for many reasons. Recruiting costs being one of them as well as many others. Why does London Giles, an outstanding player from Kimball, sign with Nevada ? He was interested in SMU. Get one Kimball guy and you have a shot @ others. Than maybe his friend @ DeSoto who plays football comes to school here. There is no excuse for SMU not to land any of the top local kids.
local kids can drum up extra interest. but thats not the main reason to focus locally at all. The reason is basically networking. Players recruit other players as much as coaches do. You are never going to establish any recruiting momentum or loyalty at Los Angeles Westchester high school when you are SMU. You can get momentum at Dallas South Oak Cliff or Dallas Kimball. Quinton Ross was a a great example of the players we should be seeking out of Dallas every year. A nice prospect, followed Sasser here and became a pro, our first since Koncak basically. Without Sasser, there probably wasn't a Q at SMU. Without Willie D, there might not have been a BHop. Without Willie D, there would not have been a Sasser. They came to play with each other. Momentum begets momentum. You will get none at Westchester. Doherty is not thinking in SMUs long term interest, he is thinking in his own. Not surprising. Doh wants to be a national guy for the next job. That is what it is, but it has drawbacks long term for SMU. I am not saying do not recruit outside of Dallas. I am saying that you should have 4-6 Dallas kids on your roster at all times. No reason not to because there is talent here. Giles from Kimball is good example. You look at the city schools like Temple, Houston, DePaul, St Johns and others who have had some success with small fan bases and you see a common theme: Local players were always the core of their roster. Always. When Depaul went away from that they started sucking. You become a national program after you build locally first. Not vice versa. Only exception might be Duke and we ain't Duke or North Carolina. Plus whoever raised that point was silly, there is not enough talent in the Triangle for anything. bad example. SMU is making a big mistake by not focusing and building locally. Dement understood it. Not surprising though because SMU has no strategy and no plan and all around just doesnt get it these days.
You are 100% correct. But can't recruit out of a poisoned well and we are lucky to follow the Tubbs fiasco with some one who has National recruiting experience. I truly believe that Doherty is trying to get the same type players Dement and Tubbs were getting from Dallas but he is striking out. Not all his fault. But those thinking that SMU hasn't had some good recruiting success in Dallas and that it is not that important are truly delusional. Dement/Tubbs got pretty darn good talent out of Dallas-it was the guys not from Dallas who were not very good. Almost all of SMU best players over the last 10 years have been from Dallas and just about all were highly recruited and excelllent recruits.
Yeah, but do you give up or do you execute a plan to dilute the poison?! You have to make the FIRST move. Lots of ways to do that, and its not just going to Luby's to show your face. Do somebody else a favor before you expect them to do one for you. Hire a local guy to be an assistant coach. How freakin hard is that? Hire an extra coach if you have to. Are you telling me SMU can't spend 100k per year to try to reach out? Doherty hasn't done this. Offer a borderline kid a scholarship from DISD instead of going to Connecticut or Cali to find bordeline kids. Show you are at all interested in a two way relationship, not just showing up when they have a player everybody wants.
Got to hand it to you, that's an interesting argument. I can see your point. I might not agree 100%, but you supported your opinion well.
