If I remember correctly, Bruton Smith of Speedway Motorsports wanted to build the speedway in south Dallas County, but the local politicos were favoring Billy Meyer the dragstrip king who had zero chance of getting NASCAR to sanction major races at a new track.

Laura Miller did not want to help Jerry finance his stadium.

Laura Miller is an idiot.

Agreed. She did the City a big disservice not keeping the Dallas Cowboys in Dallas.

and dont forget the Olympics bid she illegally dumped in the trinity.

Dutch wrote:i just heard that Jerry was in the Circle of Champions. i didn't believe it, but i only know the first 12 members, and then at the hiring heard that the number was up to 20.

I was told that he "ponied up" in an effort to help steer the SMU v. TCU game towards the new stadium in Arlington in anticipation of our improvement and how the rivalry would have a bigger draw than in years past with both teams being competitive.

anyone else hear anything along these lines?

(for the record, i am calling b.s. until i hear from my contact in the athletic dept. confirming

Jerry and Jerry Jr. support the Mustangs financially.

Getting into that stadium is going to be ridiculous...current roadways are nowhere capable of handling the traffic that will be generated on gamedays - whether it's the Cowboys, UT/OU, TT/A&M or SMU/TCU.

College games should be played ON CAMPUS! 'Nuff said.
I can already see it now. When SMU gets to finally go to a bowl again, we'll quickly get a reputation as fans that won't travel, thanks to "ponies" like you.
It's Arlington man, get a grip.

I read in the Observer that the Cowboys issue was related to a November ballot where there was a big issue/vote that the politicians didn't want on the same ballot? It was all politics and not all Miller's fault from what the article said. Although I do hate her and envy every city that has a fball and baseball or bball stadium downtown. It's very cool and adds a lot to the city.

There's a BIG difference between traveling to a BOWL game and traveling to Jerry's World in Arlington.

Glenn...you don't know me very well. I guarantee you that when SMU gets to its first bowl game in over two decades I will be one of the first in line to buy tickets for my family and me!

And my family and I have traveled to several 'away' games in recent years so don't label me as someone who won't travel!

I worked in Arlington earlier this year about a half mile south of the construction site for Jerry's World. If you think getting in and out of there is going to be easy, you're only fooling yourself, Glenn. Have you ever been stuck in rush hour traffic on Division Street or Collins Street? It's going to be much, much worse before and after events at the stadium.

thats not gonna happen. Maybe you have heard, they already play an annual game in the metroplex.

Oh, yeah? Believe it or not, we WILL play Texas again one day. And it will have to be played in a BIG stadium.

They didn't lose out on the stadium. People in the know say Jones had no intention of putting the stadium in Fair Park. He pulled that stunt to get a deal out of Arlington that he would not have gotten otherwise. It worked.
Wasn't Laura Miller the Dallas mayor who supported the GWB Library....in Irving ?
Actually, the UD proposal for the library included land in the Dallas city limits - something the SMU proposal does not.

UD was a better choice for the library anyway. It's for darn sure the faculty at UD wanted it, unlike the militant crowd at SMU.

Sorry I jumped to that conclusion. My apologies. I hope to see you at an SMU bowl game soon. Go Ponies!!!!!

If TCU wishes to move their home games to the dreary suburban sprawl of Arlington, more power to 'em.

Orsini is too smart to do so.
