There you go with the negative BS about JJ's recruits this year. Don't assume that because players didn't get three or four stars, they can't hang. The evaluation process of these athlete's in greatly flawed. I don't think most coach's take it seriously, especially when they are looking at 2 - star recruits with ton's of potential. Even with the time constraints, I IMO, JJ and his staff did a great job recruiting and they will make a major impact this year.

Its not negative BS-its been pretty well established fact over the last 20 years with recruiting classes in the same mediocre class as this years freshman class. Without looking up the exact numbers SMU is something like 0-30-1 against Tech, A&M, and Baylor and about what 4-15 against TCU. Its not done with mirrors and no matter how much you wish it to be otherwise there is a large talent discrepancy between SMU and those programs. You have 55 posts-I've said the same thing before every one of those 45 odd losses. And I've had about a thousand guys like you claim I didn't know what I was talking about.

Do you trust that JJ knows what HE'S doing? This team is already significantly better than last year.

I believe that I sat through each and every SMU game with A&M, Tech, TCU and Baylor and I believe that in 90% of those games SMU was physically whupped. I believe your expertise is Katy High School football.

a real quick parusal of the past 10 years of JJ's schedules doesn't show anything like the meatgrinder of TT, A$M, and TCU in the out of conference realm.

Unfortunately, the only UT likely to appear on our OOC schedule is the University of Tucumcari.

??? I can cite things from very recent memory that would be comparable to the schedule that you mention. There is no way that I can see from your perspective where Hawaii's nonconference schedule in 2 of the past 3 years would be far below the strength of schedule you are talking about.
2006:
at Alabama to open the season
UNLV
Purdue
Oregon State
Alabama/Purdue/Oregon State are comparable to TT, A&M, and TCU...I would challenge the statement that it is not anything like that trio of teams.
2005:
#1 USC to open the season
at Michigan State
Wisconsin
San Diego State
I would argue that USC/Michigan State/Wisconsin is comparable to TT/A&M/TCU...with USC in that mix (remember, that was the Bush/Leinart season) I'd say that nonconference schedule was actually harder than TT/A&M/TCU.

Garret,
You're right. I kept being distracted by the DII tomato cans on the list.
Though to be honest, the 1-5 record against the decent BCS teams is exactly what we're worried about in scheduling our friends in Lubbock, College Station and Ft. Worthless at in the same year. Perhaps my observation would have been better put: "I didn't notice anythign like success against a meatgrinder like TT A$M and TCU"

The Katy Tigers could have beaten some of Phil Bennett's teams at SMU.

No problem, I hate how the previous AD scheduled weak teams when he would fail to fill the schedule with decent teams. One thing to consider is that Hawaii can play one more game than normal, so filling the extra spot with a home game against a D-IAA team ($$ that the school needs) is not reducing the strength of the other teams that Hawaii plays...it is just replacing a bye week with a D-IAA team.
One thing to consider is that 2005 was a rebuilding year for Hawaii. The D was in serious need of overhaul and the offense had a new QB (started the season with Graunke, Colt took over after a few games) and several new starting WRs (Bess and RGM were notable freshmen starters).
If you look at 2006, there were wins against Purdue and Arizona State and very close losses against Alabama (fumbles by Hawaii, especially at the goal line and on the final drive of the game, killed the team's chances) and Oregon State (despite giving up a kickoff return for a TD, Hawaii had the ball on the final drive with a chance to win).
