Official petition thread to get rid of "Pony Up" song

Frankly, I was expecting SMU to hire Vinnie Paul (former Drummer of Pantera and a Dallas native) to write a new battle cry much like what they did with the Dallas Stars.

Maybe it's just me but country music makes me want to vomit in a bad way. Metal makes me want to tackle someone (which would REALLY help our defense).

Count me in on the petition. For whatever reason, the people in the athletic department responsible for marketing over the last five years or so seem to think you have to present things in the same manner professional sports do. Why don't they understand that the attraction of college football is because it is a different animal from professional sports. They need to be marketing our games as what they are...College Football. It is all about traditions and school spirit. School bands at half time and the associated pagentry. Rivalries between the schools and fans cheering for their teams. We don't need rock music piped in. We have one of the best college bands around. We don't need weird new "mascots" or weird new songs. We don't need to be changing the colors of our uniforms every time a new coach arrives on the scene either. UT doesn't do that...A&M doesn't do that ...Arkansas doesn't do that...Oklahoma doesn't do that...damn near nobody else does that except us. If nothing else, at least get the school colors right. Look at the SMU flag that flys at the south end zone along with the American and Texas flags at the next game. The blue and red of that flag are the correct school colors...not just any blue or red.

Amen. You can go to a Desperados game for the kind of "entertainment" the Marketing division seems to think SMU needs.

This whole idea is absurd. Let's go with tradition & let the band do their thing. Winning will take care of all the rest.

They play at the SuperDome which is not an NCAA football stadium.

For example at the Cotton Bowl, it's considered an NCAA venue. For any NCAA event held there, no alcohol is sold inside the stadium. If you go see a concert there, you can sell alcohol.

In Austin, at the Erwin Center, no alcohol at NCAA events, but for nonNCAA events, alcohol is ok.

Wasn't there alcohol at the Cotton Bowl when we played there? My memories of game days are a little hazy.

Alternative plan: "Sell" Ford Stadium to GJFord, so it isn't university property. Then serve alcohol.

Beer was sold "outside" the Cotton Bowl when we plaed there. You had to exit the stadium and walk down the ramp to the beer vendors. But you could then bring it into the stadium. I really never understood the whole policy.

And just because we say that does not mean that we're going to start paying players and having drunken orgies at football games.

I knew Steve-O was going to be a problem on this. I remember talking with him at our SMU tailgate party at the ECU game a couple of years ago. He was EXCITED to see their pre-game show which of course started out with the Metallica song involving a Sandman and Petey the Pirate running out to midfield to lead a cheer.

I can see Enter Sandman by Metallica pumping a crowd up. If the decision was made to change it up to pump up the crowd/team before the game, then GREAT! But country music isn't going to do it

No...we need the SMU Band playing Peruna to pump up the SMU fans. If you want something from Metallica, go to a Mavericks game where they feel the game isn't enough entertainment for the fans. Of course that will cost you a bit more than $25 bucks, but hey...you get to hear Metallica.
