I think its also interesting how the "conventional wisdom" is that Texas has the top recruiting classes every year so Mack Brown is just a Recruiter not a Coach. While they maybe true with some of the Classes which won the National Championship, is that a fact with regard to recent years. The Rivals Rankings and Average Rankings suggest No. UT's finish from 2004-2008 with Total Point Ranking on Left and Average Ranking on Right:
2004: 10-8
2005: 20-7 (small Class)
2006: 5-9
2007: 5-5
2008: 14-10

Yeah I was making the point based upon the Classes that contributed to this year's team. Yes-its amazing how that happens-his National Championship team was composed of recruiting classes ranked at the very Top. The only other years availiable on Rivals:
2002: 1-3
2003: 15-2 (small Class)

Happens all the time. That's why he gets a Big Check-its the MOST important factor in building a strong football program. Read his Contract-its part of his job responsibilities.

Perhaps Pete Carroll is the guy who underachieves-USC's Recruiting Rankings:
2004 1-1
2005 1-1
2006 1-1
2007 2-1
2008 8-2

Bob Stoops at OU:

2005: 3-5
2006: 9-11

Florida Under Zook/Urban Meyer:
2004: 7-7
2005: 15-11(small Class-Zook fired)
2006; 2-2
2007: 1-2
2008: 3-4
See a pattern developing here? The best football programs are built by Coaches who are the best in the business in recruiting-it is an essential part of winning.

do you think bob stoops thanked john blake for the players he inherited (which won his only national championship)
edit: when an OU fan starts rambling about the almighty, just remind them of that fact

2005: 22-4(very Small but outstanding Class of only 13)
2006: 7-5
2007: 4-3
2008: 11-9
