I wonder if most coaches completely ignore the online rankings or if there is some who use those rankings a lot when evaluating.
I just heard a bit of Petrino's PC. He was describing one kid and said he was 6'4" 230 lbs. Then he stated that the kid actually weighed a little less when they had him on campus and thought he actually weighed 229. He seemed very serious.
All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
No sarcasm in his voice at all?
Nope. Actually I think he was thinking of someone else and looked at his notes while he was talking and read the 229. If anything he sounded a little confused. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
Wait - you mean rivals exaggerates? They're not accurate 100 percent of the time? Staggering! You can't be serious. Say you're a head coach - you walk into an assistant coach's office and he says you should recruit some kid .... based on what a computer geek who has never seen the kid - and is not an expert evaluator of talent - says. Wouldn't you fire that assistant immediately? I don't know if I would, but I'd think about it. Coaches get paid a damn good salary, and I'm pretty sure it's not so they can sit behind their desks and read the pearls of wisdom of some computer nerds who can't tell a facemask from a catcher's mask.
Rivals and Scout verify the kids that go to their camp-its the High School Coaches and players who exagerrate. Just don't trust an unverfied height or weight because they are wrong 2/3rds of the time. Don't blame that on Rivals.
All these Coaches that say they don't pay attention to Rivals actually subscribe to their services. I agree they could care less about their rankings but they do provide valuable information about what the kid is thinking-majors, academic interests, who is involved in the decision-Mother, Father, Girlfriend, what their looking for in a school etc. And sometimes they may provide some information that might spark some interest. I guarantee you the Monday that a Player dominates one of their camps and its reported then the kid may have 5-6 schools check them out in the next week. It happened to the Peace, the Trice kid and many others. I'm sure they consult the videos too until they get the game film(which is preferrable because it has positive and negative plays.
