DONT BELIEVE THE LIES - PERUNA IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE!

Without knowing anything I really believe these two gifts were designed to at least compliment the Shetland, if not replace it eventually. The big half time show, "introducing" them to the team, June's multiple complaints about Peruna, the fact that his hand prints are all over this, the fact he openly stated that "his" team wants to run out behind them, the department produced video complete with bad music, not to mention the promotional pictures with meter sticks to simply show how large the horses were. Orsini or the school can release statements and try and say the right thing after stepping on a land mine but it's pretty transparent. These horses were not originally designed to appear on the field for 10 minutes, and then disappear quietly into the night forever, never to be seen or heard from again.

Dispute anything that's there. Anything at all. You know, you don't have to simply believe everything you're told by "the man". By the way that cheering crowd at halftime was a half-assed polite golf clap, a far cry from 10,000+ who could barely contain their enthusiasm for having new bridled Mustangs, ridden by a couple of Cowpokes. At least skeptics have the balls to ask questions and generate actual, thoughtful, debate requiring a coherent argument and intelligence to respond to. It's much better than just blindly following around whatever carrot is dropped in front of you.

With the history of the school's adminsitration and the athletic department over the past 25 years, should we believe anything they tell us?

The reason Peruna is not going anywhere is because Orisini quickly learned what a f'n disater he and his coach created after many people expressed their concerns and he quickly went into damage control mode.

You know what, the fact that "Peruna is not going anywhere" does not make me feel any better. If Peruna is not going anywhere, then I guess there is no need for these big horseys, is there. What more is there to say about that.

Senate: " FURTHER NOTING that while the spirit of the mustang is, in many ways, in keeping with our ideals as a university, the student body is concerned that the addition of the new mustangs will detract from a long-standing and important university tradition." That's a very, very nice way of putting it, not sure I would have been that nice.

A staggering disrespect for OUR UNIVERSITY SYMBOL Peruna by members of our athletic dept. is at the heart of this whole mess. And I just really find it repulsive

You're right HockeyGuy...it is just ludicrous for an SMU fan to possibly believe SMU President Turner, SMU AD Steve Orsini, and SMU Head Football Coach June Jones. They lack so much credibility and are known to be such liars. Speaking of "balls"..do you have the balls to approach President Turner on the Blvd at the next game and call him a liar to his face? How about Orsini? Or maybe Coach Jones? Are they all lying? Why is it "blindly following" when I have yet to see a single credible verifiable source that states there was ever ANY intention to "replace Peruna"? You're right, nothing wrong with being skeptical, but after looking at the facts, looking at the statements from what I consider credible sources and coming to a different conclusion is what I did....in my opinion my stance on this subject is the one that is "coherent" and can be sourced with credible sources...why you can not just accept a different conclusion is beyond me because you seem like a pretty bright young man that is not driven by ego as some others seem to be. I guess we can agree to disagree. I know we both want Peruna forever on the SMU sidelines. It would not be the same without him.

Good stuff. Student senate taking a stand for Peruna. Read up!

(I realize this is on another forum, but someone tipped me off to this and I didn't see it here).

We will never know what the original plan for the horses was, or if it was any different that was occurred.

What we do know is that in multiple DMN stories, people involved (pickens, handlers) made statements like "SMU needed a new mascot" and that the horses "may become the new mascots".

We do know that Jones made statements about the team wanting to run out behind large horses, not Peruna, replacing Peruna in function even if it did not remove him from the field.

We know that the administration in Orsini's letter stated that Peruna wasn't being discontinued, but it did not say that the horses would not be replacing Peruna's function.

The administration made no other statements defining the role of the horses.

No, I would not call either of them a liar, but no one was implying that they were lying. Trying to sneak something through the fine print? Perhaps. The statements issued by the Department were after the online/alumni furor occurred, allowing the administration to step back, pause, and re-evaluate things. Allow them to diffuse the situation somewhat by reassuring those who were upset. I still firmly believe, and would like to think I have to backbone to have an honest discussion with those in the know, that they wanted to compliment or supplant the current mascot. Will I get to answer that? Probably not since I'm three sheets to the wind when our leadership mingles with the fans...and it ain't a good idea to approach anyone relevant in that state.

The amount of resources the school and certain individuals put into the acquisition of the new Mustangs, in my opinion, was way too much for them to simply roam safely on Equestrian team grounds. That's a good argument tactic to diffuse though...compliment the other side, i like it...touche.

For those of you who think the horses were brought out to "compliment" Peruna and that they would be on the field at the same time, consider this: for the big halftime show introducing the new Mustangs, they made sure that Peruna was up the tunnel and around the corner, so there was NO CHANCE Peruna would see the horses. They were concerned that if Peruna even got half a glimpse of the horses, he would try to kick them.

Never would they have allowed Peruna and the Geldings on the field during a game.

Did I miss something? Is Dallas Hall going to be razed or painted yellow or something?

The city of Dallas has supported SMU since its beginning, when local citizens pledged $300,000 to secure the University's location. In appreciation, SMU named its first building Dallas Hall, which remains the University's symbol and centerpiece.

This?

I have always wondered why we use UVA's rotunda as our university logo.

Image

Dallas Hall has east and west wings. The building in the SMU logo, like UVA's rotunda, does not have wings.
